Biography

Vicey was born about 1753-1757, presumably in Halifax county, Virginia. Halifax county was created by subdividing Lunenburg county in 1752 and Pittsylvania county was in turn created by subdividing Halifax county in 1767. These county names are sometimes used interchangeably, but care needs to be given to the years being referenced. It is likely that Vicey Bays and her family resided in the same place during her lifetime, but the location borders and names changed around them.

Vicey had ten known children from about the years 1774 - 1888. These names, and the names of her children's spouses, are given in the 1811 Land Sale by heirs of John Bays.

Her husband died some time before 10 October 1811. She possibly passed away about 1814 or 1818, or at least some time after 1811 in Pittsylvania county, Virginia.

Birth

Date estimates range from 1750 to 1758. These estimates have been based on her husband's age and the ages of her children, which all are in turn only estimates.
Birth place is assumed to be Pittsylvania county, Virginia. The place remained the home of this Bays family, but the political boundaries changed several times. Their home was in Brunswick county before 1745. It was in Lunenberg county from 1745 to 1752. As the population grew, the county would be subdivided again into Halifax county. Finally Pittsylvania county came into being in 1767. The name of the county was dependent on the date used.

Levicy was born about 1755. Levicy Robertson ... She passed away after 1811.[1]

Names

There are many variations found for her name. The 1997 published Bays family history has a family group sheet for John Bays, Jr. and on it his wife's name is '"Vicey Unknown.'"[2] Another book by the same author, also on the Bays family, has an image of a land sale by John's heirs in 1811 and in that document his wife's name is also spelled '"Vicey.'"[3] That is the extent of any primary or secondary sources collected here. If there are others, please add them.
As far as UNSOURCED variations are concerned, the list above includes most of them. Examples, or the origin, of the name Ann Robertson have been found in a number of places and these can be added here, with links.[4] Examples, or the origin, of the name Louisa Lavica Green have been found in a number of places and these can be added here, with links.[5] This note by Steven Lake on 02Nov2017

There is confusion with Louise's first name. It has been written Lavicy, Vicey, Lauicy, Lavascy, etc. These are thought to be variations of her nickname, not her surname at birth.
Very little direct information for the wife of John Bays, Jr. is known. Most of this is known from a Land Sale record from 1811 by his heirs after he died. In the record are listed the names of his wife '"Vicey,'" his ten children and their nine spouses.[6] It is necessary to work backwards from this in order to reach reasonable conclusions about the rest of what is known. It would be of interest to include information given for Vicey from family history, as long as we note what contradicts any information given in primary sources or taken indirectly from them.

VICEY (Maiden Name Unknown) Bays has no known birth date or place. Her maiden name is unknown, therefore her parents names are unknown. These facts, unknown as they are, come from a lack of sources. Care must be taken in generating or accepting data to replace these unknowns. What information that is known about her children can help build indirect information for when and where she was married, and even when she may have been born.

We barely have enough sources to define the identity of the wife of John Bays, Jr. and the mother of his ten children. Two land records, one in 1786 and one in 1811, have her name spelled "Vicey." Various trees, pedigree charts and published Bays family histories have several variations. It is generally agreed that her various nicknames were taken from a given name of "Louisa," and a few of those are; Lavica, Levica, Lavicy, Levicy, etc. Some places have a combination of Louisa plus a nickname.
As for her maiden name, there are about three variations. Some have "Unkown Maiden Name," several have Robertson and use Ann in place of, or in addition to, Louisa, and a few have the name Green. It may be possible to trace the origins of these various names to try to find the earliest use of each. Until someone is willing to devote time to do that, I suggest listing the various names here.

Louisa (or nickname) Green
Until we have a source that proves her maiden name, I would suggest that the data fields above simply use "Vicey" and "Unknown."

One point in favor of the maiden name of "Green" is from a descendant, who states in an email that her grandfather's adopted uncle and aunt make that claim. Please make suggestions here on how I could make that a source - Steve Lake 17Nov2017.

Parents

The 1997 published Bays family history says that Vicey's maiden name is unknown.[21] Other UNSOURCED trees offer a maiden name of Unknown, Robertson or Green. Many efforts have probably been made to search old records and histories to find a more clear answer to the question of which one is right, or at least which one has a greater weight of evidence.

This would be a good place to collect some of this evidence.
Unknown

Robertson

Green

This is a cross reference to profiles for parents that are frequently cited for Louisa Lavica Green. Going to William Green or Dinah Butt Green will show that there is no evidence for a daughter with this name. Besides there being a lack of evidence on the Green side, another major problem is geography. By simply referring to their life-long places of residence and comparing those to a map of Virginia will make this evident. Berkeley county, where the Greens lived from 1751, at the latest, until their deaths, is on the banks of the Potomac River across from Maryland, making it almost the northern-most county in Virginia at that time, but now in West Virginia. Pittsylvania county, where John and Vicey's records are found, is on the southern border next to North Carolina. It seems that it would be easier to scour Pittsylvania and neighboring counties for candidates named Green who would at least not be a geographic challenge. This note by Steven Lake on 02Nov2017

Marriage

No marriage record is known to exist. If a marriage record does exist, please add it here. The next best record we have is the 1811 Land Sale by the heirs of John Bays, Jr., in which his surviving wife is named Vicey Bays.

Children

VICEY's ten children ( As listed in 1811 Land Sale record):

  1. . Edmond Bingham and Lucy [Bays] his wife (Lucy b.1774)
  2. . John Bays and Sally his wife (John, Jr. b.1776)
  3. . John Mills and Betsy [Bays] his wife (Elizabeth Betsy b.1777)
  4. . Meshack Bays and Betsy his wife (Meshack b.1779)
  5. . Joshua Bays and Ruth his wife (Joshua b.1778)
  6. . Ebedingo Bays and Tabitha his wife (Abednego b.1786)
  7. . Josiah Bays and Letty his wife (Josiah b.1783)
  8. . Beverly Bays and Nancy his wife (Beverly b.1786)
  9. . William Martin and Polly [Bays] his wife (Mary Polly b.1783)
  10. . Keziah Bays (b.1788)

Alternate spellings and birth year estimates given in parentheses.
From that list and the earliest and latest birth years (1774-1888), Vicey's marriage to John Bays, Jr. may have been about 1773. There are several rules of thumb used for a woman's normal child-bearing years and a normal age at marriage, but we can simplify that here and say a reasonable year of birth for Vicey was about 1755. That makes her about two years younger than her husband, age 18 at marriage and age 33 at the birth of her last known child.

Residence

The 1811 Land Sale record was recorded in Pittsylvania county, Virginia. There is no evidence that Vicey was born, married or died anywhere else but there. It may be a reasonable possibility that Vicey may have lived with one or another of her children after the land she inherited was sold in 1811 and it is believed that most of them were living nearby for several years after this.

Death and Burial

Some family history says that Vicey died in 1814, others say 1818, but her alternate death dates need to be collected here for evaluation.
The date of 01 Jan 1811 has been suggested, but has no source. The date of 10 Oct 1811 is the date of the Land Sale by heirs of John Bays record, which has been saved in the data section. This is an "after" date because that is the latest known record showing she was alive. The year of 1818 has also been suggested, although it is unclear if 1814 or 1818 are "before" or "after" dates tied to some other event or record. There is no known burial place for Vicey Bays.

Name: Vicey 'Lavasey Lavicy' [-?-].. ArrayTaking - as the last name from -?-, and marking it uncertain.

Collaborative Process

There is a need to merge several duplicates with varying info and relationships. I am suggesting a "Collaborative Process" in order to incorporate and maintain all of the variations so that no one feels that their information is being left out. Another reason to have a plan for this process is because these are 18th century people and have many descendants, who need to be included currently as well as showing our work for the many who follow. There is a need to provide as many sources as possible and that is another reason to pool our resources.

The first phase is to load the profiles with sources that support the data and relationships. Eventually we will have to arrive at one best name or number in each of the data fields, but all the options need to be listed, labeled and sourced in the bio. I would suggest that anyone who has material to add do it in increments, one section at a time. During this phase nothing should be deleted except by general consensus. We'll figure out what consensus means depending on how many contributors get involved.

The second phase is to complete the merges. It is not necessary to complete one phase before beginning another. By setting up section headings, additional info, sources, references, opinion, etc. can be added any time. The first two phases may take a few weeks or several months, depending on how many contributors get involved and how much info needs to be processed.

The third phase is monitoring and maintaining the merged profiles, as well as answering questions and continuing the process of improvement.

A fourth phase has been suggested when DNA evidence is available.

This proposal suggested by Steve Lake on 10OCT2017.

There were three duplicates of John, which have been merged.
There are at least five duplicates for his wife, Ann Robertson 1757, Louise Lavicy Bays 1755, Levicy Ann Robertson 1755, Lavicy Green 1757 and Vicey Lavicy 1753.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Vicey by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Vicey:

Robertson-3945 and Unknown-379220 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles were intended to be included in the merge process of five profiles who were all wives connected to John Bays, Jr. These two remain because the merge proposal was lost.

There are obvious conflicts between the various versions of who the wife of John Bays, Jr. was. As much bio info needs to be preserved as possible because there must to be a place where these conflicts can be compared, and hopefully resolved,

I'll admit that I am ready and getting impatient for the five profiles to get merged. No one is stepping forward to make them happen and it appears that we will have to wait until they are automatically approved after 30 days. One good think about the wait is becoming more convinced that the merges are the right thing to do.

In order to help those who are less immersed in this than I am, and less convinced, I added a "Names" section to all five profiles. This, I hope, helps explain the name variations. I also hope that Shery's examples of where some of the names originated helps, too. The bottom line is having convincing evidence that all the various names refer to the same person, and that is the one and only wife of John Bays, Jr. and the one and only mother of his ten children.

Green-8068 and Lavicy-1 appear to represent the same person because: Name variations, but common husband, John Bays.

Robertson-3945 and Robertson-9283 appear to represent the same person because: Names, data and relationships are similar. Neither profile has sources. Variations need to be incorporated in surviving profile bio in order to compare and prove.

Lavicy-1 and Unknown-379220 appear to represent the same person because: "Lavicy" and "Vicey" appear to be nicknames for the given name of "Louisa." Other info and relationships are similar.

I attempted to write a first draft biography based on the one original record we have for Vicey and that is the name for her that I used throughout the bio. Added a paragraph to the name section. Added a section for parents and a cross reference to the Green's of Berkeley county that there is no evidence for Vicey being their daughter.

Added the two published sources on her son, Josiah, and daughter, Lucy. Also added source references to those books. Please review, comment, add or correct as needed.

The variations of her nickname matter less than what we decide her full birth name was. If we can agree on "Louisa Levica" or similar spelling, which goes in the fields for "Proper First Name" and "Prefered Name," then we can have a section for her nicknames.

There is also confusion with her maiden name. Some say it is unknown, some say it is Robertson, some say Green. We may never know for certain what it was, but what we know now is that there is a difference of opinion. We need to merge several duplicates, five at least, and we will need to somehow decide what surname the surviving profile has and the opinions can go in a section of the bio.
