Sophia Fransen was born on 17 September 1842. [1]

She departed Hamburg for the United States on 2 November 1865 on the ship Senator Iken. [2] She was traveling with her husband Ludwig Töpper and their infant daughter Marie. [2] She arrived in New York on 2 January 1866. [3] She and her daughter Marie were now listed as being part of the family of Wilhelm Block. [3]

She married William Block on 23 January 1866 in Will County, Illinois. [4]

She appeared in the 1870 US Census in Green Garden, Will County, Illinois. [5] She was living with her husband William and their children Mary, Anna, Fredericka and Frederich. [5]

She appeared in the 1880 US Census in Green Garden. [6] She was living with her husband William and their children Marie, Anna, Friederica, Elisa, and Mine. [6]

She appeared in the 1900 US Census in Frankfort, Will County, Illinois. [7] She was living with her husband William and their daughters Katie and Minnie. [7]

She died on 24 December 1903. [1] She was buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Frankfort, Will County, Illinois. [1]

Research Notes

  • A the end of the voyage to America, her husband Ludwig was listed as having a wife Fredericke and daughter Marie, and she was listed as the wife of Wilhelm Block. Ludwig married Fredericke and Sophia married William a few weeks after arrival.
  • In the 1900 Census she was the mother of 9 children, 5 of whom were still living. [7]
