Biography

Volga German
Catharina (Unknown) Stürtz is a Volga German.
Catharina (Unknown) Stürtz has German Roots.

Family #7 in the 1767 Stephan census.

Catharina Stürtz, last name at birth unknown for now, was born about 1729, based on her age in the 1767 Stephan census. The names of her parents are not known. Her birth place is based on the area from which her husband claimed they were from in their immigration papers. The loction may change if we can find a German birth record for her. I will update this profile as needed.

Her husband Johannes Stürtz is first mentioned in the Kulberg Reports as a Lutheran farmer from Darmstadt, although he later refers to his town of origin as Wohnfeld. Darmstadt was likely the largest city closest to Wohnfeld and given as a general area, not a specific place where the couple lived. [1] At 52 years of age in the 1767 Stephan census, that gives him a birth year of 1715. [2] She and her husband had at least four children, possibly five:[1]

  • Simon, born 1748
  • Anna Catharina, born 1751
  • Anna Elisabeth, born 1755
  • Elisabeth Catharina, born 1764

In the 1767 Stephan census, another child appears in the household, Rosina, age 10, giving her a birth year of 1757.[2] It's not clear if a child was omitted from the Kulberg Reports or if the family took in an orphan during their journey to the Volga River region of Russia and she assumed the Stürtz surname.[1] His daughter Anna Catharina was missing, probably because she was married and living with her husband's family.

1767 Stephan Census[2]

Family # 7
Head of the Household Johannes Stürtz, age 52, Lutheran farmer from Wohnfeld
Wife Katharina Stürtz, age 38
Child #1 Simon Stürtz, age 21
Child #2 Anna Elisabeth Stürtz, age 13
Child #3 Rosina Stürtz, age 10
Child #4 Elisabeth Stürtz, age 4

I don't have a copy of the 1775 Stephan census, but her husband Johann Stürtz is no longer listed in the 1798 census. [3] If her husband died in the late 1760s or early 1770s, it's possible that Catharina remarried and was still alive, living in a different household. If she was still living in 1798, she would have been about 69 years old. Otherwise, she was likely deceased.
