Biography

The name of the wife Robert Codman married in Essex County about 1640 is not known; it is estimated that she died by 1700, presumably at Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard, where her daughter Hepsibah -- the couple's last known child -- was born, and where Robert died by 1676.

A birth date and location originally given above -- 16 February 1620 at Croston, Lancashire, England -- was not based on any known source, and has been replaced with a general estimate of "about 1620", based on the approximate average marrying age range of the time.

The known and presumed children of Robert Codman and his wife include:

Benjamin (presumed, although his parentage is not given in his birth record), born in 1641 at Salem[1][2]
James, born at Salisbury in April of 1644[3][4]
Joseph (birth not known)[5][6]
Stephen (birth not known)[7][8]
Abigail (presumed; believed born at Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard about 1654)[9][10]
Hepsibah, born at Edgartown say 1657[11][12].

Charles Edward Banks also adds a third daughter, Rachel, whose birth he estimates in 1660, believing her to be the Rachel Codman who married John Pasco at Boston in 1685, but this is questionable.[13][14]

Research Notes

The marriage of the Mrs. Codman of this profile -- maiden name unknown -- should not be confused with the marriage of Jane Dobson to a different Robert Codman, recorded at St. Dunstan's, Stepney, Middlesex (now London) on 29 July, 1645,[15] reference to which was originally included in this profile. The incorrect married surname originally given in this profile -- "Dodman" -- appears likely to have resulted from some confusion of "Codman" with "Dobson".

NEHGS shows (in an index-only record) the marriage of a Robert Codnam to Elizabeth Greene at Woolverstone, Suffolk, on 31 May 1631,[16] which is intriguing given that Charles Edward Banks, in his History of Martha's Vineyard, noted that the spelling "Codnam" appeared to be the earliest variation in New England, and speculated that it derived from the "Codenham" found in Suffolk. We have, however, no indication that Robert Codman arrived at Salem in 1637 with a wife Elizabeth (he appears in the Salem record only with his unnamed mother, each having been granted land), or indeed had any marriage prior to his union with the wife who is the subject of this profile.
