Sally (probably a diminutive of Sarah) Carter was born in 1797 in Clinton, Middlesex, Connecticut. She married Joel Chittenden, the son of Benjamin and Mabel (Dudley) Chittenden, on May 20, 1818. They made a life together in Madison, New Haven, Connecticut. Although, since Joel was a ship's captain, Sally was likely alone for long periods of time.
Sally and Joel had six children. They were Charles Carter Chittenden (1819-1844), Lucy Fowler Chittenden (1821-1874), Benjamin Franklin Chittenden (1822-1844), Mary Mehitable Chittenden Humiston (1824-1878), Joel Chittenden (1825-1826), and Sarah Amelia May Chittenden Bishop (1830-1900).
All three of Sally's sons died young. Joel Jr. died in infancy. Charles and Benjamin, along with their cousin Hosmer, were lost at sea. The three were serving aboard the "Ocean," when it was engulfed by a severe storm near Mobile (I assume Alabama, but Talcott doesn't say) on October 5, 1844. The ship was never heard from again.

Children lost at sea: 1844 - The OCEAN was a Schooner. Talcott says it was a Brig, but according to mysticseaport.org, a listing of all Connecticut vessels, OCEAN was a Schooner built in Guilford, Connecticut in 1839. It was 62' 7" long. It had a 19'6" beam. It had 2 masts and a square stern. Also, a billet head, whatever that means. It was a "coasting trade" vessel and operated from 1839 to 1844 when it was lost at sea. Joel probably served on a similar type of vessel.
