Biography

flag of the Jamestowne Society

Jane is said to have married Thomas Farley on July 12, 1622 in Savoy Church, Worchester, England. [1] No actual marriage record has been located.

Jane, wife of Thomas Farley[2]

Jane is known to have been living in Virginia, as wife of Thomas Farley, in 1624.[3] [4] [5] Her estimated birth year (1600) is based on that.

The so-called "Living and Dead List" dated 16 Feb 1623 (i.e., 1623/4) shows Thomas Farley living at Archers Hope[6] with an unnamed wife and child. (Hotten, p.181; Records, p.47)

A year later, the Muster of 1624/5 shows Thomas Farley still at Archers Hope with a wife Jane Farley and a child Ann. No ages are given. Thomas and Jane are both said to have arrived on the Ann in 1623. [7]

This information is not entirely unambiguous. Alternative constructions are possible, but it seems reasonable to suppose that Jane and Ann are the unnamed wife and child of 1623/4, that Thomas and Jane married in England, and that Ann is their daughter, born in Virginia (or, as Tyler says, during the crossing).

Jane's maiden name is unknown.

There seems to be no further record of Jane. Her husband disappears from records after 1632. Given this, it seems unlikely that John Farley, born about 1648, was a child of Thomas and Jane. By the time he was born, there were other Farley immigrants in Virginia.

It is unknown when Jane Farley or her husband Thomas Farley died. Various dates have been advanced for Jane's death, from 1651 to 1665. Since her last child was born about 1650, the only date we can advance with any degree of certainty is after 1650. A burial location is unknown, but possibly they were buried on their plantation near Jamestown.

Children

A list of 14 alleged children born between 1623 and 1650 has been given, but its provenance is obscure and no corroboration has been found.[8]

Research Notes

Disputed Origins

The published claim (Farley, p.5) that she was "Lady Jane Sefton, of the family of the Earls of Sefton" is internally contradictory, unsupportable, and clearly never intended to be taken seriously, but offered for family entertainment only.[9]

Jane's parents are disputed. One theory states she is the daughter of Richard Sefton of Chester, Cheshire, England; christened 18 January 1598 at St Oswald, Chester, Cheshire, England .[10] This theory has several problems, not the least of which is there were several "Jane Seftons" living in Chesire, England during the relevant time period. One Jane Sefton, daughter of Richard Sefton, was buried on 8 June 1674 at Barrow, Cheshire, England.[11] Another Jane Sefton married Peter Leigh on 23 November 1620 at Lymm, Chesire, England.[12] So how can we say with any certainty that the Jane Sefton christened in 1598 is the wife of Thomas Farley?

Another theory suggests she is the daughter of John [or Richard] Mollyneux and Margrett Hope, christened 30 September 1607 in Leigh, Lancashire, England.[13] One problem with this theory is the fact that a Jane Molyneux and spouse Francis Kenion had a daughter Mary who was christened on 5 January 1636 at Sefton, Lancashire, England.[14] Is it possible this is the same Jane Molyneux, daughter of John Molyneux and Margrett Hope?

As a result, her last name at birth is disputed. This profile was originally "Jane Sefton" but was merged into the Molyneux profile on 15 March 2015. No records have been found naming her as "Lady Jane Molyneux." All no records so far found list her as "Lady Jane Sefton."[1][15]

The merge is now completed and a disputed origins section added with links to the disputed parents); what now remains to be done (perhaps among other things) is to work on the children. As far as I can see, there is only one documented child-- Ann. What are the sources for the additional Farleys attached here?

Thank RJ; that's Twelve generations of Farleys, by Jesse Kelso Farley, junior. I see that he adds after the list of children that he got the list from Randolph Farley of Nashua NH and adds, "have not been confirmed from any other source."

Unknown-484271 and Molyneux-409 are not ready to be merged because: Not all of the information matches -- parentage. It seems like more research needs to be done.

Hi Amy,

Do you see any evidence in either profile that suggests there are two people here? If not, I see no reason to not proceed with the merge and use the information that is cited as the winner in case of disagreement and if neither is cited, the research notes could maintain the entry not taken with preference going to the profile that has been around a long time and not the new one.

Please let me know if you see any reason not to proceed as I've written.

Thanks.

-William

The profile had a link to "Disputed Parentage" that went to a non-existent page. Closest I could figure that might have been intended: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Disagreements_about_Certainty

Thomas Farley & "Ux. Farley" (wife of Farley), a child, and Nicholas Shotton are on Virginia's Living and Dead List as living, "At Archur's Hoop."

Dear Profile Managers,

Judging from the "Disputed Parentage" section, shouldn't her parents be marked as uncertain?

Also, Sources # 1, 8, 9, 30, 32 & 33 are no available, making all of the information taken from them to be now Unsourced.

LNAB Molyneux. Notwithstanding the dispute
Additional research is needed for this profile in regards to parents. At some point, if it is proven that Molyneux is indeed her LNAB, we will change it, but until that documentation is provided, we will leave as is, Sefton is the earliest last name documented.
