Nancy Kinnear Hilyard was born 6 Nov 1841 in Norfolk, St. Lawrence County, New York, the daughter of Moses Kinnear. She died on 23 Dec 1917 (aged 76) in Massena, St. Lawrence, New York, and is buried with her husband at Old Pine Grove Cemetery, Massena, New York.

Obituary: “Mrs. Nancy Hilyard, a highly respected resident of this village died at the home of her son on South Main Street Saturday morning about 11:30, after an illness which had confined her to her home for a number of weeks, though she had been in failing health for about a year. The cause of death was shrinkage of the stomach. The funeral was held from the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 1:30, Rev. F.A. Miller conducting the service, and the remains were buried in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Hilyard was born in Norfolk November 6, 1841, being a daughter of the late Moses Kinnear. In early life she went to Brasher and that was her home for the large part of her life. Her husband, Elijah Hilyard, died about twenty years ago. She was known as a Christian neighbor and friend and in her home life lived the religion which she professed. She was for many years a member of the Methodist Church and remarked to a friend only a short time before her death that she was just waiting for the call to go.

She was the aunt of Mrs. Robert Carney, of this village. Mrs. Carney's mother died leaving four young children, and Mrs. Hilyard took these children into her home with her own and cared for them until they were grown up and they never knew any other mother. Seven years ago her son Elijah lost his wife and since then Mrs. Hilyard had lived with him and care for his home and his young son. They spent four years at Tupper Lake, coming to Massena about three years ago. Surviving of the immediate family are two sons, Elijah, of this village, and Herbert, of Waddington, also the little grandson who has never know any other mother. The large attendance at the funeral showed the esteem in which she was held. There were present from out of town, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kinnear, of Tupper Lake, Mrs. and Mrs. Ray Lester, of Boonville, Mrs. Hattie McKay, of Boston, Mrs. Sarah Waite, of Utica, who is Mrs. Hilyard's sister and who has been with her throughout her last illness, Mr. and Mrs. John Porteus and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Porteus, of Waddington, also a large number of relatives and old neighbors from Brasher.” Massena Observer; Thursday, November 15, 1917 [2] [3]
