Biography

Martha Ann was born in North Carolina.[1][2][3] Her birth year vary between records: 1833 in the 1850 census,[1] 1820 in the 1860 census,[2] and 1825 in the 1870 census.[3]

She first married a man with the surname of Johnson or Johnston and had at least three children, John, Nancy, and James.[1]

On 28 November 1853, Martha married William "Wiley" Shambley/Chamblee in Orange County, North Carolina.[4] They had a number of children: Cornelia, Martha, Sidney, Virginia, Minnie, Mary/Rebecca (same daughter?), William, and Linna. (William R. may also be Wiley's son, see research notes)

She appears in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses in Wake County, North Carolina.
