Biography

Martha Ann was born in North Carolina.^[1][2][3] Her birth year vary between records: 1833 in the 1850 census,^[1] 1820 in the 1860 census,^[2] and 1825 in the 1870 census.^[3]

She first married a man with the surname of Johnson or Johnston and had at least three children, John, Nancy, and James.^[1]

On 28 November 1853, Martha married William "Wiley" Shambley/Chamblee in Orange County, North Carolina.^[4] They had a number of children: Cornelia, Martha, Sidney, Virginia, Minnie, Mary/Rebecca (same daughter?), William, and Linna. (William R. may also be Wiley's son, see research notes)

She appears in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses in Wake County, North Carolina.

Death Date
