Mary was born about 1804-1820 in County Londonderry, Ireland. She was the daughter of James Irwin, a miller, and Margaret nee Irwin. [1]
In that county, she married Bartholomew Taaffe. [1] They would live at Newtown Limavady (Rathbrady Beg). [2]
With husband and daughter Elizabeth, she emigrated to New Zealand under the Assisted Immigration scheme, arriving at Canterbury on the Blue Jacket on 30 Aug 1867. [3] The children James, Mary Ann and Bridget had emigrated to New Zealand a few years earlier; daughter Sarah Jane, who married in Ireland, would follow later.
She passed away 1 Jan 1898 age 93 due to influenza, and was buried three days later at Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch, in the same plot as her husband. [1] [4]
The death certificate gives age 93 in Jan 1898; but the passenger log gives age 47 in 1867. However,it was common for people to give false dates on passenger logs to qualify for Assisted Immigration.
