Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that Winnie was the daughter of Richard Randolph and Pocahontas descendant Jane Bolling.

Winnie's maiden name and her parents are not known. See Research Notes, below, for more information.

Biography

According to an article by Ira Chitwood (excerpted from Descendants of Matthias Chitwood), Winnie's name only appears on a deed from Bedford County, Virginia, in 1773 signed by Richard and Winnie Chitwood. The Deed book abstracts are available at Family History Centers. Richard and wife Winnie are also mentioned in an account of the Chitwoods in the William and Mary Quarterly [1]

Children

Richard Chitwood (and presumably his only known wife, Winnie) had three proven children:

They were probably also the parents of:

For more information about the children of Richard Chtiwood and his brother James Chitwood see Children of Richard Chitwood and James Chitwood of Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Research Notes

The documented children of Jane Bolling and Richard Randolph do not include Winnie; they were:[2]

  1. Richard,
  2. Mary,
  3. Jane,
  4. Brett,
  5. Ryland,
  6. son died in infancy,
  7. daughter died in infancy,
  8. John,
  9. Elizabeth.

In addition, Richard (the father) left a will that names all his children. No Winnie.[3]

The birth place should probably be either blank or Colony of Virginia (uncertain). It seems a safe assumption that she was born in Virginia, but the "Rutherford" part comes from the family moving to Rutherford County, North Carolina. Also, her death date should be changed to after 1773 as she was still living in 1773 when she and her husband made a deed in Bedford County. See her husband's profile for details.

I find it absurd how many people are so invested in having links to the Bolling family that they create what I call"Whac-a-mole" profiles. What's that? you ask.

that is where you take a square peg and pound it into a round hole.. whack, whack, whack.... Facts do matter in family history, thank you to the editor of this profile who pointed out the lack of documentation for any relationship to Jane Bolling and Richard Randolph.
