Biography

Cross of St George
Sarah (Unknown) Monk was born in England.
Middlesex (historic flag)
Sarah (Unknown) Monk was born in Middlesex, England.

Sarah, maiden surname unknown, was born in around 1835, perhaps around 1832, in Paddington, Middlesex, England.

At some point, she married George Monk, and they had a child called Sarah Monk in around 1856 in Middlesex, England[1][2][3].

At the 1871 Census[4], Sarah lived on 22 Bridge Street in Bermondsey, St Olave Southwark, London, Surrey, England with her husband, George, and her daughter, Sarah. Her husband was a carman, and both he and Sarah snr were recorded as 39 years old, making their birth year roughly 1832. His birth birthplace was listed as 'Ireland', and her's was listed as 'Paddington, Middlesex'. Their daughter was 16 and attending school.

At the 1881 Census[5], George and a Sarah Monk were recorded living on 32 Ruby Street, Camberwell, London, England (the same street that their daughter and her husband and children lived on). George was a carman, as he had been on the previous census. Sarah's birthplace was the same, but the George's was now recorded as 'Weybridge, Sussex'. Also, they were both listed as 46 years old, as opposed to the expected 49 based on the previous census.

Research Notes

No pre-1871 or post-1881 records have yet been found or confirmed for Sarah.

If George's birthplace was indeed Ireland, this 1861 census record could be a possibility:

  • George Monks, living Liverpool, Lancashire, age 30 (birth year about 1831), occupation: dock labourer, relationship to head of household: boarder, marital status: single[6]

However, it is likely that George would've been married to Sarah by 1861 as their daughter was born in around 1855/56. Although, it is possible that Sarah jnr was born out of wedlock to Sarah snr. and then George later married Sarah snr. and accepted Sarah jnr. as his daughter. Or something like that. Maybe Sarah jnr's birth is registered under an unexpected name.
