Biography

1015 Birth Year Estimation

In the absence of other data, his birth year is estimated as, say, 30 years prior to the birth of his sons. This is speculative and useful primarily for placing him in a particular time period.

Research Note

This man's name (Norman) is only known because of his sons. As noted by Ormerod already long ago, the information in the Irish Peerage (Archdale, Lodge) on this man is unworthy of attention. Nevertheless it was also copied in old versions of Burkes. [1]

There is no record of him as Eustace. The castle of Montalt in Wales (various spellings) and the lordship of Hawarden, did not exist yet in his time. There was no "Barony". He does not appear in Domesday. And so on.

2 suggestions: make second name "unknown", and remove Norman conquest category. Anyone see any concerns?

switched relationship to 3 sons to confident because now this article is based on the things we know: a name, and the sons (there is no neutral setting once an uncertain status has ever been given)

I do not find this person in Domesday? The story given by Lodge and Burke does is the one we are repeating with Eustace the Norman Hunter etc. Ormerod, Farrer, Keats-Rohan and modern writers seem to ignore that.

Is there any reason this person needs to be in the top level Norman Conquest category?
