Cicely can be found in a John Burke pedigree (Long of Semington, Trowbridge, Whaddon, etc Wiltshire) as the wife of Robert Long, and which indicates that she is the widow of Coppinger. [1]
John Gaisford's PhD thesis gives further information on Cicely's first marriage. It also shows a pedigree with Cicely (a widow) married to Robert Long, but states that Cicely first married John Copinger, a prominent fishmonger. The pedigree indicates that from this previous marriage, Cicely had two children: Walter Copinger and Thomasine Copinger (which is consistent with information in her will, see below). The PhD thesis goes on to say that: 'a few years later her daughter Thomasine Copinger marries (presumably with Long’s approval) the mercer John Duckett'. [2] However, the Long pedigree (see below) says that Cicely's daughter 'Thomazine' married Christopher Dauntsey of Trowbridge, which is consistent with her will.
A very informative transcript of John Copinger's will is available online on the Copinger and Coppinger website. [3] This website mentions that John is the cousin (and probably the apprentice) of Sir William Copinger of Buxhall, Suffolk, Lord Mayor of London 1512, who was also a fishmonger. [4][5]
The will transcript states that John made his will on the 4th May 1534 and that he was a 'ffishemonger of London' and that all his goods will be divided into three equal parts. Firstly to his wife 'Cecyll', secondly to his five children: Rause, Willm, Thomasyn, Walter [will 1570; married Elizabeth, will 1594; children Walter and Susanna) and Stevyn, thirdly to various legacies, details of which are given in the transcript. Apparently Cecily continued Robert Long's business after his death, including trading abroad. [6]
A pedigree of the Long family of Semington, Trowbridge, Whaddon, Monkton etc Co. Wilts. (that can be purchased online). [7] shows that Cicely 'dau. of....relict of .....Coppinger. Will 1559. Buried at St. Lawrence's Jewry,' also had (at least) three children with Robert Long, these were: Magdalen, who married Roger Sadler of London, Merchant; Mary, who married Henry Vyner; and Martha, who married Wil. Meredith.
Cicely was buried on 19 September 1559, at St. Lawrence's Jewry, London,[8] and her Will was proved on 10 October 1559.[9]
Cicely's Will names her son-in-law Henry Vyner and Marie his wife, her son-in-law William Meredith and Martha his wife; and her son-in-law Roger Sadler and Magdalen his wife. Other children noted were Thomazin Dauntesey and Walter Coppinger. Other family members noted were her godson (grandchild?) John Sadler, her grandchildren Anne and Henry Vyner, her brother (perhaps brother-in-law) Thomas Long; her cousin Johan Danyell, William Copinger, and Ann Long ("now dwelling with me"). Ann Long was the daughter of Henry Long of Whaddon (Robert Long's brother). [10]
In a description of an indenture document, it appears that Henry Vyner (Cicely's son in law) was one of the executors of her will. [11]
The will of Cicely has the surname Longe. However, the text of an extract of her will states: '1559 Coppinger, Copinger, Long formerly, Cicely, widow, St. Laurennce Jurie, London; Essex; Surrey 44 Chaynay'. [12]. This text, either wrongly suggests that she married Coppinger secondly, or alternatively it may indicate that her maiden name (as well as her second married name) was actually also Long.
There is an intriguing Rootsweb entry that suggests that Coppinger is Cicely's maiden name and that she is the daughter of William [Walter] Coppinger of Buxhall, Suffolk and Beatrix Asherst. Her birth record in this entry is given as Abt 1501 and that the place (presumably baptism record) is St Mildred's Church, Bread Street, London which (coincidentally?) is where Sir William Coppinger was buried. It would be of interest to locate this St Mildred's Church, Bread Street, birth/christening record for Cicely and to determine her maiden name. Cicely's marriage record to John Copinger is needed to determine her maiden name.
Transcription of the Will of John Duckett, mentioning wife Thomazine and father-in-law Robert Longe.[13]
Will of Robert Longe, Mercer of London 1552 mentions another son William Coppinger, and that Thomasyn married Christofer Danneye.
