Biography

Joane Battman died about 1597. She left a will dated 20 July 1594, which describes her as "Joane Battman of the parish of Northstocke in the Coun[ty] of Somerset and in the Dioc[ese] of Bathe and Wells widowe " She asked to be buried "within the church of Northstock" and left a legacy for the maintenance of the church.[1][2]

Her will names these family members:

  • her daughter Alice Maynerd of Barton R[egis?] and her son
  • her daughter Mary Maynard
  • her goddaughter Joane, the daughter of Williiam Maynerd of North Stoke
  • her son-in-law John Battman
  • her husband's two daughters, Alice Smith and Elizabeth Abraham
  • her daughter Joane Britton
  • her son William Battman, who she made residual legatee and sole executor of her
  • her son Stanton Battman and her son-in-law Nicholas Britton, who she made overseers of her will

Her will was proved at London on 29 September 1597 by Richard Goodall, a notary public acting on behalf of the executor, William Battman. Her will is transcribed here.[1][2]
