The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Judith (_____) Shatswell was the mother of several New England immigrants. As such, she has been protected by the Puritan Great Migration Project.

An estimated birth of 1578 would be 20 years before her eldest son was born (estimate).

Her children, and their approximate ages, and her death are revealed in a Chancery Court Proceeding "Curwen vs. Smith" Chas., cc. 15, n. 56.

22 November 1627 addressed to the Lord Keeper of the Great Seale of England: Matthew Curwin of Sibbertoft, Northampton, husbandman, and Margaret, his wife, one of the daughters of Judith Shatswell late of Sibbertoft, widow; Theophilus Shatswell, son of Judith; Marie & Sybil Shatswell, daughters of Judith, claimed that they had not received there inheritance, and they accused William Smith of deliberately cheating them. The defendant said in rebuttal that he had turned the entire estate over to the eldest son John when he came of age, and that he had actually spent more than the estate had, in seeing to the children while they remained minors.

Analysis of the various statements give the following:

  • ______ Shatswell of Sibbertoft, Northamptonshire, died about 1606.
  • Judith ______ Shatswell, his wife, died probably 1612/3 in the "Diocese of Peterborough, where the sayd Judith died." Sibbertoft is in the Diocese of Peterborough.
  • Children
  1. John Shatswell b. about 1597/8
  2. Margaret Shatswell b. about 1598/9; m. to Matthew Curwen
  3. Theophilus Shatswell b. about 1599
  4. Sibyl Shatswell b. about 1601
  5. Mary Shatswell b. about 1605; m. John Webster.

Disputed Information

  • She was not the daughter of Rev. Henry Dillingham. Henry did not have a daughter Judith. Ipswich, England birth place is probably left over from this alleged parent.
  • There is no indication that her husband was named John.
  • A death of 17 April 1748 in Sibbertoft or Massachusetts, is obviously wrong. ? Where did this date originate?

Shatswell-27 and Unknown-82081 appear to represent the same person because: Incorrectly attached as a granddaughter. please merge into Unknown-82081

Suggestions were already made a couple of years ago to disconnect children Judith and Curwin (Anderson indicates John Shatwell's only child was Richard). Judith and Curwin look like they are the result of misreading/ or misentry of John's various relationships with the Corwin family. I'd like to actually merge those profiles away if there are no objections.

As indicated in the profile, Judith's maiden name is unknown, and her husband's first name is unknown. The name "Judith Corwin Clapp" is internet garbage, and "U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900" includes a lot of internet garbage -- it is not a reliable source.

I agree with Vic (note below). I have finished research and written an updated PGM biography for John Shatswell-5. I found no evidence that he had a daughter named Judith. Please disconnect. Thank you.

Blank-487 and Unknown-191947 appear to represent the same person because: Mrs. Shatswell's maiden name is Unknown. Blank was probably meant to be "empty" "unknown" rather than surname Blank

Unknown-191947 and Unknown-321969 appear to represent the same person because: Daughter Sybil of Unknown-191947 was b. Ipswitch, Suffolk, England. Close enough for a merge, I think, since yours appears to be an "orphan" in the WikiTree database...

Unknown-289055 and Unknown-191947 appear to represent the same person because: Same mother of Sibyl Shatswell.

If nobody objects, I'm going to delete her parents.

What evidence is there that John and Judith Shatswell had a daughter Judith? She is not mentioned in the last suit brought in 1627 by Margaret (Shatswell) Curwin, which included her brothers and sisters. (The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. Boston, MA: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1847-. (Online database:, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2013.) "A New Look at the Corwin and Shatswell Families" David A. Macdonald; NEGHR 150 (April 1996):184)

I believe she should be disconnected from these parents.

At second glance, it seems that her maiden name should be changed to "Unknown"

At first glance, Judith's death info doesn't seem right. She couldn't have died in America in 1616!
