Biography

The only certain thing about Agnes is that she was married to Peter Hairston and living in Virginia in 1762.[1] There are more unsourced stories about her.[2][3]

  • She was an Irish Lady of Rank who married Peter Hairston in about 1714.
  • She either died in Scotland before 1728 when Peter moved his family to the British colonies in America, or she died on the ship coming over along with one of their daughters, or she died in Virginia after having about 12 children. If either of the first two items are true, then Peter had two wives and Agnes was the 2nd one.

Peter first settled in Pennsylvania when they arrived. Sometime around 1739, he and his family moved from Pennsylvania along the Great Wagon Road thru Wood's Gap (now Jarmin Gap) into Goochland County, Virginia (later Albemarle County). In 1747 he paid "Twenty five shillings" for 250 acres in North Garden.[4] He and Agnes sold that land in 1762 for 48 pounds.[1]
