Joseph Unsworth was born in 1781 in Ashton, Lancashire, England.

He married Mary and they had at least 3 children. In 1841, they lived in Liverpool, Lancashire. He was a joiner. [2]
By 1851 he was widowed. Aged 70 lived with his daughter and son-in-law, together with their two sons in West Derby, Liverpool Lancashire. [3]
In 1861 he was a bread baker working with his son-in-law at a shop on Essex Street, West Derby, Lancashire. His daughter and her children also lived with them. [4]
