Obituary[5]

Nambucca and Bellinger News (NSW) - Friday 29 September 1944 - page 2

MR. A. J. UNTERRHEINER.

At 2 a.m. on Thursday morning another venerable pioneer of this district died at his home, in the person of Mr. Adam. John Unterrheiner, whose age was 81 years. On the following day, Friday, the funeral, after a service in the R.C. Church at Macksville, proceeded to Macksville Cemetery where interment took place, Very Rev. Dr. O'Rourke officiating, Mr. Daltoon undertaker.

Deceased is survived by his wife and family, the latter including John Joseph and Phillip Henry (of Macksville ), Elizabeth Amelia (Mrs. Barnett, Macksville), Irene Catherine (Mrs. Emery, Summer Hill), and Emily Eleanor (Mrs. Latham, Kendall). There are 29 grandchildren and 24 -great-grandchildren. Mr. Harry Unterrheiner (Tewinga) is a brother; sisters include Hannah (Mrs. Channells) Mary (Mrs. H. Forrester), Constance (Mrs. E. Forrester), and Emma (Mrs. S. Cook). Deceased sisters are Louisa and Sabina (Mrs. Joe King).

The late Mr. Unterrheiner was born at Toowoomba where his father had a small grant of land and carried on as a shepherd for many years, then moved southward, travelling with his wife and family when deceased was about five years old. They travelled by bullock waggon over rough country, there being no roads, which made the journey very difficult and long. They eventually stopped on the Nambucca, where deceased's father took up land and established the present homestead. As a young man, Adam helped his father to grow sugar-cane and crush it; they had a small sugar-mill and made sugar and treacle.

Later on Adam married Miss Emily Amelia Forrester, of Gosford. He took up farming and timber-cutting on the place now owned by Mr. A. V. Gossip. Subsequently, when the late Mr. Angus McKay purchased a steam separator, he started dairying and used to take the milk, about three miles per boat, get it separated, and bring the skim home. Later he finally moved to the present homestead where he carried on farming and dairying until nine years ago when, owing to ill-health, he retired to the lower portion of the farm until his death. He was an honourable citizen, of quiet disposition, and won himself many friends, his motto being "Love thy neighbour as thyself."
