Mary-Jane was born in 1867 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. [1] She was the second eldest daughter of Thomas Unwin and Annie Reid.
Mary Jane came to New Zealand with her Family in 1874 aboard the Carisbrooke Castle. [2]
