Summary

JOHN UPDIKE 1708-1790 [1] Born about 1708; married 1738 Mary Bragaw of Newtown, Long Island; died 1790 ; was a farmer near Cherry Valley a few miles north of Princeton, N. J., in what was then called " the Western Precinct " or Hillsborough, later Montgomery township in Somerset County, and now Princeton township in Mercer County.

Mentions of him in records

  • He was the second son and executor of his father's will, although he did not act as executor.
  • He brought a suit in Hunterdon in 1730.
  • He lived in Maidenhead in 1730.
  • In 1744, 1763, and 1764, he owned a large parcel of land in Somerset County, north of Princeton. Three roads were laid through this land.
  • He held land in Hillsborough Township, near Princeton, in 1750, 1758, and 1763.
  • His land north of Princeton was a landmark on a 1765 map of the Middlesex and Somerset County line, although not adjoining it.
  • He traded at Princeton in 1767-8.
  • He made his will in 1783 in Somerset County, where he died in 1790. (This contradicts the profile death place information.)

About his land holdings

His Somerset County land was just south of Cherry Valley, and near the eastern line of Maidenhead and Hopewell. He lived for 50 years on this land, which was very close to his father's home in Maidenhead. His land adjoined (and included?) the land on Stony Brook in Maidenhead owned by his grandfather Johannes.

About his wife

John married Mary Bragaw of Newtown, New York, on May 11 1738. [2] Her family was descended from Bourgon Broudard, a Huguenot. While he first fled to Mannheim, Germany, he then went to Bushwick, New York in 1675, with his wife Catherine LeFebre. They were among the first members of the French Church in New York. In 1688 they moved to Dutch Gills near Newtown and bought some land. Their son Isaac Bragaw was born in 1676 and became a weaver. [3] [4] (Note: Newtown is now Elmhurst, Queens, New York City.)

Summary of will

SUMMARY OF JOHN UPDIKE'S WILL, Aug. 5, 1783:

"John Updike of Somerset Co, NJ, devises to his sons, Lawrence, Abraham, Jacob, Burgune, William, Rulef, John and Isaac, each a portion of "land laid down in map by Joseph Skelton"; also his wearing apparel to be divided equally among "my nine sons herein named". To (his eldest son) Lawrence, 5 pounds for his birthright. To John, 6 pounds (probably for his name). To his daughters, Mary Johnson and Sarah Wood, 50 pounds each, these amounts to be paid by the sons.

Executors: his sons Lawrence and Burgune. From: Liber Wills, 31, p. 527, T. [5]
