Biography

Levi Updike II BIRTH 4 Mar 1784 in Somerset, Somerset County, New Jersey, DEATH 18 Aug 1861 BURIAL West Side Cemetery Geneva, Kane County, Illinois

Son of William Updike & Naomi Johnson, his date of birth is documented but his early history is sketchy with (currently) no records to support some of the suppositions found in vague genealogies.

Levi, alive as of the 1860 Geneva, IL census, died sometime between 1860-1870.

(Note: there is another Levi Updike who died in 1861 and is buried in Dutchneck Cemetery in Princeton, NJ but he's the son of William Updike & Alchea Vorhees).

The family lived in New Jersey until about 1820 when they moved to Tompkins County, New York where their last three children were born.

In 1836 (or '37) Levi headed west and arrived in Kane County which was then in its infancy of settlement. He purchased land for a farm about a mile and a quarter east of present-day downtown Geneva, making the Updikes one of the oldest families in the area. It's unclear how many of their children made the journey with them but the 1840 Geneva census shows them as a family of 7 (Levi & Theodosia with 3 sons & 1 daughter of the appropriate ages for Levi, B. G., Johnson, and Caroline).

Marriage between Theodocia Grover and Levi Updike in Somerset, NJ 1801 Jun 10

Children (per FAG memorial)

Children attributed to them (but unconfirmed) include: William, Cornelius, Catherine (Alden) Gilbert, Sarah (died in infancy), Susan, Samuel, Randolph, Eliza (Simeon) McKinley, Levi, B. G., Caroline nee Updike Wycoff Teal Thayer, and Johnson Updike. Of these, William, Catherine, Samuel, Randolph, Eliza, Levi, B.G., Caroline & Johnson all appear in Kane County records.

The 1840 Geneva census shows them as a family of 7 (Levi & Theodosia with 3 sons & 1 daughter of the appropriate ages for Levi, B. G., Johnson, and Caroline).
