Biography

Jacob Burnap Upham was born on 4 Jan 1824 in Amherst, Hillsborough, New Hampshire. He was the son of Jacob Upham and Sarah Hayward. Jacob married Mary E Chapin of Antrim NH on 31 Aug 1871; their children were Mary Bertha and Ernest Jacob. Mary died on 11 Nov 1874. Jacob then married Sarah F Converse of Amherst NH on 4 Nov 1875; their son was Charles Jacob. Jacob died at age 67 on 19 Dec 1891 in Amherst; he was buried in Amherst's Meadow View Cemetery.

Mr. Jacob B. Upham of Amherst died very suddenly of heart failure, between four and five o'clock on Saturday evening, Dec. 19th. He had spent the day in driving to Nashua, a distance of ten miles, attending to items of business there, reaching home about four o'clock, having been in his usual good health through the day and during several weeks previous. While attending to the evening chores immediately after his return, he was stricken suddenly, and a few minutes later was found by his son, having fallen apparently, without a struggle, and even then had probably ceased to breathe. Dr. Chandler, who was immediately summoned, pronounced the cause of his death to be as stated. Mr. Upham was nearly 68 years old, and had owned and lived during the last twenty yeas on the farm which had before been occupied by the Upham family during more than seventy-five years. He leaves a widow, a son, and daughter, also two brothers, John H. Upham of Amherst, and Warren Upham of Somerville, mass., and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Kelley of Salem, NH., and Mrs. Susan Lowe of Troy, NH. In all the relations of life, as husband, father, brother, neighbor and citizen, he was kind, thoughtful to others, and faithful to duty. The funeral was on Tuesday afternoon, the interment being in thr cemetery at Amherst Village. [The (Milford NH) Farmers' Cabinet, 24 Dec 1891, "Amherst," page 5, col. 2]
