Biography

William was born on 10th November 1872 in Chewton Mendip, Somerset. [1] [2] He is the son of Charles Edward Uphill and Mary Payne.

William was baptised at St. Mary Magdalene, CHewton Mendip on 18 December 1872. [3]

1881 - Cutler's Green, Chewton Mendip. William is living with his parents, and three siblings - Rosina Weaver Uphill (recorded as Rose on this Census), Charles Edward Uphill and Austin Uphill.

18 Jul 1881 - A little lad named William Henry Uphill, of Chewton Mendip, was looking at his father, working a chaff-cutter, on Monday, when he put his right hand between the cogs and had a couple of fingers severely crushed. He was removed to the Wells Hospital. [4]

1891 - Cutter's Green, Chewton Mendip. William is living with his parents, and six siblings - Rosina (recorded as Rosenah on this Census), Austin, Harry Uphill, Reece Uphill (recorded as Rees on this Census), Julia Uphill and Fred Uphill. He works as a blacksmith's apprentice.

12 April 1898 - William married Annie Margaret Hawkins at St. Mary the Virgin, Litton, Somerset. Groom's occupation is Blacksmith. Sister Rosina is one of the witnesses. [5]

18 Jan 1901 - TEMPLE CLOUD PETTY SESSIONS - Tuesday ... William Uphill, of Hinton Blewett, and Prior Norman, of Nempnett, appeared to summonses charging them with moving pigs without a licence. Uphill applied to Sgt Ball at East Harptree, for a licence on behalf of Norman, the seller of the pigs; but the officer said the declarations could not be made by him (Uphill), and referred Norman to Sgt Williams, at Chew Magna, in whose sub-division the pigs were. The parties alleged that thge afterwards went to Chew Magna, but not finding the sergeant at home they brought the pigs on, without a licence, to Uphill's farm at Hinton Blewitt (within an infected area), where Sergeant Ball subs equently saw them. Defendants both pleaded guilty. The chairman said the regulations must be observed. The fine was £20, but would be mitigated to £2 each and costs. [6]

1901 - Sadbrook Farm, Hinton Blewitt. William is living with his wife Annie, son Edgar and daughter Beatrice. He is a farmer.

1911 - Ford, Litton, nr. Bath. William is living with his wife Annie, and their five children. Edgar, Beatrice, Albert, Edith and Dorothy. William is a blacksmith.

1921 - Lower Street, Chewton Mendip. William is living with his wife Annie, and three of their children. Edgar, Albert, and Dorothy. William is a blacksmith for the Emborough Stone Company. [7]

1939 - Lower Street, Chewton Mendip. Quarry Blacksmith. Living with daughter Edith.

William died on the 13th November 1949 in Chewton Mendip. [8]
