Biography

The first husband of "Widow Elizabeth Upson" of Sudbury and father of Hannah Upson who married Edward wright is unknown. Exhaustive research into Thomas Upson of Connecticut and Stephen Upson who came in 1635 on the "Increase" and arrived in Boston late July 1635 has yielded no connection to this family. While Banks, Pope and Savage have searched for a connection in Boston records in fact no record of Stephen Upson of Boston has been found after his arrival. While we can't rule out that Stephen could have been a member of this family other than a shared surname there is no reason to suspect that he was.[1]

Anderson, however, concluded without explanation, that Stephen Upson was indeed husband of Elizabeth and father of Hannah.[2]

It is my opinion that this profile should be for Stephen Upson, and that an explanation, as speculative, or uncertain as the 1st husband of Elizabeth Unknown should be worked into the bio.

Otherwise, there is no profile presently for the person named Stephen Upson who migrated in 1635 and should be a pgm project profile

Questioning why we have this set up as we do, with Stephen Upson given the name, "Unknown Upson."

See his sketch at Great Migration: https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/great-migration-immigrants-to-new-england-1634-1635-volume-vii-t-y/image?pageName=159&volumeId=13260

So we do know that his name was Stephen. And Elizabeth is named his wife by 1638. Child Hannah b. 1638, so would be his. Under "comments" Anderson adds that no records for Stephen have been found in NE, and goes on to say "several of the passengers on the Increase settled first at Watertown, which was the first residence of many of the settlers of Sudbury, which provides some support for the identification of this passenger as the husband of Elizabeth (_____) Upson.

Doe anyone have a source that indicates the Stephen Upson who came on the Increase and died about 1638, married Elizabeth Upson/Griffin/Whale, and had daughter Hannah? If not we need to detach this Upson from Elizabeth, and rename him Stephen. Or leave him unknown Upson, husband of Elizabeth Unknown. Chris
