Biography

John was born about 1761, in Cumberland County, North Carolina. He was the son of John Upton and Delilah Upton.

"Notes for JOHN "THE PIONEER" UPTON III:

Eleanor Baxley was his first wife.
He is listed in 'Prairie Pioneers of Illinois, Volume I.
John moved from North Carolina to Knox County, Tennessee in 1810.
He then moved to Smith County, Tennessee in 1813.
His first wife, Eleanor died in Smith County
He married his second wife, Zenath (or Ozina) Shaw in Smith County, and migrated to White County, Illinois in 1817.
He was in the present site of Enfield in 1819 when he first took up his first tract of land.
He had a mill down where the B & 0 now runs in 1826 and he and his son, John, IV took up more land in 1826"

John Henry Upton died in 1850 in White County, Illinois, and is buried in Enfield Cemetery.[4]
