Biography

Our mother's mother Mabel Dorothy UPTON was an unmarried woman, Bertha Florence (her married sister) and John William CHAPMAN unofficially adopted her and raised her as their own daughter. Mum was born on September 24, 1920 at Wickham, Newcastle, NSW

Mum, Doreen, was married at the age of 20 years in the Methodist Church, Lismore to Stewart (Dad) , Son of George and Martha (nee LAW) SPENCER on Saturday July 12, 1941 by Rev Frank Nelson BIDDLE. Consent to the marriage was given by Mabel Dorothy DUENCE (mother of the bride). Witnesses to the marriage were Bertha Florence CHAPMAN (step mother of the bride and sister to Mabel Dorothy DUENCE) and Joseph J SIMPSON (J P) (friend of the bride). Joseph gave Doreen away.

During their married life mum was a housewife and helped on the farm and cane planting time, In her early days she played tennis and later tokk up Lawn Bowls and was quite a good player taking out trophies

Mum died on Sunday November 15, 1992 at the Caroona Rest Home, Goonellabah, Lismore where she was a resident, from Myocardial Infarction, at 72 years of age. Informant was Richard SPENCER (son, Empire Vale, via Ballina). Her funeral was held at the Methodist Church Ballina November 17, 1992 at 10.00 am conducted by Rev. John HANNAFORD followed by interrment in the Lawn Cemetery, Alstonville, Richmond River above her husband (and our father) She is survived by 2 sons and daughters in law and six grandchildren
