Biography

William James was born the eighth child and fourth son to Samuel Salte Upton and Elizabeth (Sternbeck) Upton on September 27, 1848, at Upper Mill Creek, Macdonald River, NSW and Christened January 14, 1849 according to the rites of the Church of England, Macdonald River by William West SIMPSON MA. Chaplain.

William James was married on December 30, 1876 at the Wesleyan Parsonage, Kiama, NSW to Caroline, daughter of George (dec) & Mary Cole (nee BUTLER) LEE. Consent was given by the widowed mother of the bride, the bride being under the age of 21 years. Officiant was William MOORE Witnesses to the marriage were Duncan McDERMOTT & Mary A MOORE.

William and Caroline had six children:- 1. Sarah A (1877-bef 1940) 2. William George James "George" (1879-1948) mar Emily Jane Corrigan 3. Mark Phillip (1882-1967) mar i: Kathleen Durack ii: Elizabeth Vickery 4. John Parker Gordon (1885-1889) -- 5. Miriam Mary Ellen McArty "Millie" (1887-1965) mar Alfred George Mason 6. Ivy (abt 1895)
