Biography

James Upton was born at the Lichfield Union Workhouse in 1844. He was christened at St Michael, Lichfield, on 14 March 1844, the son of Emma Upton, single woman of Yoxall, Staffordshire.[1][2]

He was recorded in the 1851 census in Hamstall Ridward, Staffordshire, under the name of James Lester, after his mother's marriage to George Lester.[3]
