Biography

Friend Upton aka Frederick Friend Upton was born in 1834 in Cuckfield, Sussex, England to Thomas Upton and Frances (Mitchell) Upton. Friend Upton was christened on 19 Jan 1834 in Cuckfield - his father was a labourer.^[1]

In 1841 Friend Upton (age 7) lived at Heyward's Heath in Cuckfield with his father Thomas (40-44), mother Francess (35-39), and three siblings: Jane (10), Isaac (4), and George (0), as well as six others.^[2]

Friend's mother Frances Upton passed away before 1851.

[Unable to locate Friend on the 1851 census - as his marriage record lists his profession as Seaman, it is possible he was at sea. His father and brothers lived in Cuckfield.]

Friend Upton (age 24, Seaman, son of Thomas Upton, Labourer) married Ellen Upton (age 22, daughter of Isaac Upton, Labourer) on 27 Dec 1858 at the parish church in Ardingly, Sussex.^[3] The marriage was registered in Cuckfield in the last quarter of the year.^[4]

Friend and Ellen immigrated to Australia before 1860. They had at least seven children, all born in Victoria, Australia:

Fredk Friend Upton passed away in 1891 in Mt Prospect, Victoria, aged 57 years - his father was Thos Upton and his mother was Fanny.^[5]

Research Note

The father of Rose Hannah (Upton) Matheson was previously thought to be Frederick William Hupton (1839-1926), son of Ezra Hupton/Upton. However, that person lived his whole life in England and did not immigrate to Australia.
