Biography
Our knowledge of this particular James Upward is very uncertain. We start with a baptism in Pimperne in Dorset of James Upward, son of Benjamin and Elizabeth on 19 Feb 1786. There was a marriage of James Upward to Charlotte New in Stourpaine on 26 Dec 1814, but this was probably the son of Thomas and Ann Upward, born 1795, died (probably) 1817. We cannot be certain who his father was, but any trace of him and his brother John in the Pimperne area vanishes after their mother's burial in December 1787. The Upward family had branches in London and on the Isle of Wight, and James may have moved to one of those places.
