Biography

There is no clear record of his birth, and 1700 is only a guess, although his wife was baptised on a date given as 16 Mar 1694, but as the calendar year began on 25 Mar, this is actually 1694/5, therefore 1695 in the calendar system used from 1750. The earliest record for Edward Upward is the marriage of Edvardum Upward (sic) of Hilton to Maria [Mary] Gilham of Monkwood Hill on 14 Jun 1725 in Buckland Newton. There were two "yeomen" farmers at the start of the eighteenth century, both named Thomas. The one living nearest to Hilton was Thomas Upward of Woolland, so he was probably more closely related to Edward than Thomas Upward of Bere Marsh. Although Mary is not mentioned in the earliest baptism of his children, it is fairly safe to assume in the absence of the mother's name that she was the mother. The baptisms were in Hilton, of Thomas on 6 Sep 1725, John on 7 Dec 1727 when the family were at Aller, Ann on 1 Feb 1729 (possibly 1730 when converted to post-1750 calendar) also living at Aller, Sarah on 16 Apr 1732 when the family were at Ansty, and Catherine on 10 Sep 1738 when the family were at Ansty. Edward's burial at Hilton on 20 Jul 1749 gives his residence as Harper's Lane.
