Franz Urbach was born in Austria

Birth

Franz Urbach was born on 28 Jun 1902 in Vienna, Austria [1]. His parents were Julius Urbach (1866 - 1942) and Rosa Fischer (1875 - ).[1]

Marriage and Children

Franz married Anna Federn (1905 - 1993) on 27 June 1931, in Vienna, Austria[2]. Their children were...

  1. John Charles Urbach (1934 - 2002)

In 1935, Franz was living with his wife, Anna in Vienna, Austria [3]

In 1938 Franz and Anna sent their son, Karl, to their American friend Muriel Morris Gardiner Buttinger (1901-1985) in Sweden where they would be residing before coming to the United States. [4]

Vienna, Austria

In 1921 he began studying physics at the University of Vienna with Karl Przibramon. He received his doctorate in 1926 with his dissertation "On luminescence and absorption in particular of Sylvin treated with Bequerel rays". Urbach conducted research from 1923 as part of his dissertation project at the Institute for Radium Research. After his doctorate he continued his work in the research group of Karl Przibram largely unpaid until 1931. From 1927 to 1930 Urbach also taught at a Viennese adult education center. Efforts to find an assistant position at the University of Vienna and at the Technical University were unsuccessful.[5]

In 1929/30 he received a scholarship from the Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft. In 1930/31, at the suggestion of Stefan Meyer, he acted as an adviser to the municipality of Vienna in setting up a radium station in the Lainz hospital, to which a physical laboratory was attached on his initiative. In 1932 he took over the management of this laboratory, in 1933 with permanent employment.[5]

After the February fighting of 1934, Franz Urbach, who was a member of the Social Democratic Party, was dismissed from this post without notice. From 1934 to 1938, Urbach conducted research on infrared-sensitive phosphor telescopes at the Institute for Radium Research of the Academy of Sciences under very limited circumstances. In July 1936 he applied for a patent for a "method for making objects in the dark or covered by fog visible in infrared light". Because of his Jewish origins, Franz Urbach was no longer able to continue his research activities at the Academy of Sciences after the "Anschluss". In the Academy's almanac for 1938, his name appears in the list of persons who "worked in the institute or with the institute's funds" [5] The Anschluss, also known as the Anschluß Österreichs, was the annexation of the Federal State of Austria into the German Reich on 13 March 1938. [6] After working briefly at the Photographic Laboratory of the Technological Institute in Stockholm in the fall of 1939, Franz and his family emigrated to the United States. [5]

Immigration

Flag of Vienna, Austria
Franz Urbach migrated from Vienna, Austria to United States.
Flag of United States

In 1939 Franz Urbach emigrated to the USA via Sweden together with his wife Anna Urbach and son . On 14 Dec 1939 they left Oslo, Norway on the ship Bergensfjord sailing to the United States. They arrived in New York, New York, United States on 23 Dec 1939. [7] Franz found a position in the Physics Department at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York.[5]

On Franz's Declaration of Intention record he is listed as unemployed. He was listed as being white and having a fair complexion. He had brown eyes and black-grey hair. He was 5ft 7inches tall and 136 pounds. He said he arrived on the ship Bergensfjord at New York, New York, United States. Franz gave the information on 8 March 1940[2]

On 23 April 1940, Franz. age 37 a physicist, was living with his wife, Anna age 34 a housewife, and next door to his wife's aunt and uncle, Blanka (60) and Walther Federn (1869-1949) (70), in Assembly District 9, Manhattan, New York City, New York, New York, United States.[3]

Franz was in the US World War II draft card records on 14 February 1942 in Rochester, Monroe, New York.[8]

In the 1944 Rochester City Directory Franz was listed as a research worker at the University of Rochester.[9]

Franz was in a land record in 1948 in Monroe, New York, United States.[10]

In the 1950 census Franz (age 47), a physicist, was the married head of household living with his wife, Annie (age 44) and his 2 children (ages 2 and 16) in Irondequoit, Monroe, New York, United States.[11]

In the 1951, 1952 and the 1954 Rochester City Dircetory Franz was listed with his wife Anna [12] [13] [14] and working at Kodak Park which is now the Eastman Business Park [15] In the 1959 and 1960 Rochester City Directory Franz was listed with his wife Annie and he is now listed as a physicist. [16] [17]

Death and Burial

Franz died (age 67) in April 1969 residing in Monroe, New York.[18]. He was mentioned on a memorial in Falls Cemetery, Greece, Monroe County, New York, United States with a death date of April 1969.[19]

Patents

Franz was issued a worldwide patent while working in Vienna, Austria and many more patents while working at Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New York, United States.

Research Notes

Hellen Muriel (Morris) Buttinger (1901-1985) was a very good friend to Franz and Annie Urbach. She was the one who helped their family get out of Vienna, Austria in 1939.

Urbach Rule

Urbach Rule in Solid State Physics was printed in Scientific & Academic Publishing

Abstract

The paper is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Urbach rule. The Urbach edge behaviour, measured by optical absorption spectroscopy, is analysed for different solids. The general regularities of the Urbach rule revealed in crystalline and amorphous solids as well as the temperature behaviour of its main parameters are discussed. The main attention is paid to the studies of the possibilities of the Urbach rule parameters to be used for studying disordering processes in solids, short- and medium-range order in amorphous materials, specific features of the Urbach “bundle” in nanosystems and its variation in the vicinity of phase transitions. It is shown that the parameters obtained from the Urbach rule give an important information about dynamic properties of elementary excitations in condensed matter as well as about the interaction of electronic excitations with phonons.

Conclusions

The paper deals with the characteristic features of Urbach rule manifestation in the crystalline, non-crystalline compounds, and nanosystems as well as with the effect of disordering processes and phase transitions on the parameters of Urbach absorption edge. It is shown that by using the Urbach rule it is possible to obtain the important information about the dynamics of electronic excitations of the condensed state, when the contribution of different lattice vibrations is considerable in the absorption processes. The Urbach rule allows one to find rather easily the degree of localization of states in the lattice and to determine the effect of lattice disordering on the localization of electronic excitations.

Today it can be said that in 1953 F. Urbach established an important instrument for studying optical absorption in various non-metalic materials, differing in structural features, aggregate state, dimensionality of the crystal lattice, phase transition types and other physical properties. Its advantages are the simplicity and universality for various materials and systems. It is likely that in future the Urbach rule will be successfully applied in medicine and biology in the study of soft matter, including nanobiosystems. [25][26]

Franz was a member of the American Physical Society, the American Institute of Physics, and the American Optical Society. His fundamental contributions to thermoluminescence can be seen in the naming “Urbach rules”.[27]
