Biography

John Urquhart, son of Poyntz Urquhart and Anne McNeir was baptised in the parish of Resoulis, Ross and Cromarty on 23 March 1799.[1]

John Urquhart married Catherine Thompson on June 1, 1825 in Inverness.[2] John was a carpenter living in Maggot, in the old part of Inverness by the River Ness, and Catherine was living on Church St. in Inverness.

They were in Jemimaville by 1826 when their first child was born. Jemimaville was in the parish of Resolis and started out as an estate village in 1822. By the 1820's the laird advertised for workers to come and develop the village. By 1829 their third child was born and John was a carpenter at Teaninich Castle. In 1831 a fourth son was born and the family was living in Avoch.

They were there until 1839 when a daughter Nancy was born in Aberdeen.

The 1841 Scotland Census lists the family on John St. , Aberdeen West Aberdeenshire and John is working as a gardener. There are many other people listed in this household. Is it an estate? [3] Another daughter Agnes is born here in 1842.

By the 1851 census his wife Catherine, and children John Jr., Nancy and Agnes are not living with him. Catherine's mother, Jane Thompson is with the family. Did she step in after Catherine died to look after the family? They are living at 90 Woolmanhill and he is still a gardener. Woolmanhill is next to John St. in Aberdeen. John, and his remaining children David, Hugh, Adam and Agnes come to Canada in 1853 (according to his son David's 1911 census record) and some find their way to St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co. Ontario.

John died after the 1871 census in Darlington, Durham West, Ontario where he was living with his daughter Agnes Crumb and her family.
