"The Urtons were elegant and charming people with a delightful wit and humor, especially articulate in the art of story telling."
Birth and Family---
John was born in Norton, Derbyshire, England to William L Urton and Maria Cutt or Cut. He had a sister, Martha, and a brother, William.
Theft and Consequences---
When John was 18 or 19 years old he and his friend, Benjamin Godfrey stole 54 hats from a neighbor, James Cutter. They were arrested on 27 Nov 1732 and sentenced on 6 Dec 1732. Fortunately for them the value of the hats was less than the amount required to go to prison. Instead they were sentenced to transportation to America. On 3 Feb 1733 they boarded the "convict ship," the Smith, which went to Virginia and Maryland. John was left in Fairfax Co, VA. I don't know if he was an indentured servant at first or not.
Marriage & Children---
He married someone by 1750 because he had 6 children---Thomas S, John Jr, Catherine "Kate," William, James Alfred, and Peter.
Shenandoah Valley, VA---
By 1750 he was in Shenandoah Valley, VA where he had many jobs as a chain carrier for various neighbors who were surveying their land.
Fairfax Co, VA
At some point he bought land in Fairfax Co, VA because he had a farm there. Financially, he did not do well and had to sell his farm and everything on it to Richard Thompson and Thomas Magruder on 15 Jan 1774 in lieu of the rent he owed them.
He died after 1774 in Fairfax Co, VA.
John was born in 1714. He passed away in 1765.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
Urton-17 and Urton-124 do not represent the same person because: Some of the other person's genealogy is incorrect. I have sources and the other person does not. John was my immigrant ancestor to this country and his name, Urton was my great-grandmother's. I would try much like to continue my line. However, if someone has more knowledge about his children, James 1752-5 Sep 1815, William abt 1750- 24 Jul 1815, John d 8 Apr 1825, and Catherine or Kate it would be nice to have a complete tree instead of just my line from Peter.
Urton-124 and Urton-17 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates, same parents. Urton-124 has no sources and no information: please merge the duplicate away.
No problem. I have no desire to take over anything. I just responded to an automated message that there seemed to be duplicates and in fact the review presented certainly seemed to be the same person. So I agreed. I am only interested in getting the best data possible for my own family tree.
You mentioned Louise McLeego. She did not exist. My grandfather, William Laban Urton (son of Peter, son of John b. 1713-1714 Norton, Derbyshire, England) apparently started to write his genealogy for his descendants (I have a copy) but his daughter Nettie took over before/after he died and embellished it quite a bit. Unfortunately, many people have a copy of it and it is full of errors. She also claimed that John married Louise McLeego and she brought brass bells (or pans) with them. Not true. John was sent here on a convict ship (unmarried) and landed in VA. He and another man stole 40-60 hats in Norton, Derbyshire, England. Suzanne Tharp Guerra
