Martin was born in 1841. He was the son of Harris Usher and Cynthia Hewitt.

He married Lydia Maria Worth (1838–1903). They had the following children:

He passed away in 1909. Buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Tama, Tama County, Iowa.
