  • He gained the rank of Midshipman in 1791 in the Royal Navy.
  • He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1797.
  • He gained the rank of Commander in 1806.
  • He gained the rank of Captain in 1808.
  • He was Captain of the H.M.S. Undaunted on 28 April 1814 in which he carried Napoleon from Frejus to Elba.
  • He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)
  • He was appointed Knight Commander, Hanoverian Order (K.C.H.) in 1831.
  • He gained the rank of Rear-Admiral of the Blue in 1846.
