- He gained the rank of Midshipman in 1791 in the Royal Navy.
- He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1797.

- He was Captain of the H.M.S. Undaunted on 28 April 1814 in which he carried Napoleon from Frejus to Elba.

- He gained the rank of Rear-Admiral of the Blue in 1846.
