BIOGRAPHY

Researched and written by Gayle Foster, descendant ---

Cornelius was born and married in Indiana. His older children were born in Indiana. Cornelius and family followed his older brothers to Missouri in 1882. C.J. & Louisa & family traveled by covered wagon from Indiana to Missouri in September arriving at E. B. Utter's house in Missouri October 5, 1882. He and Louisa first lived in Richwood Township, McDonald County, Missouri. Eventually they settled in Barry County on a farm, and built their home northeast of the intersection of FM1015 and FM 2110 (N36 46.635 W094 02.425 near current-day Wheaton. The house faced west and was located on a rise of land, with an orchard behind the house. Their home was built in the style common to these immigrants from the midwest. The house was a wooden, two-story home with two rooms on the lower lever, and an interior stairway leading up to two rooms upstairs. (a reference called this a "double-pen cottage.") There were no hallways, the downstairs rooms were linked by an open doorway and the stairway led upstairs. Many homes had two front doors, one from each room, opening out onto the front porch. The porch roof did not extend along the entire front of the house, but had a hip roof at each end. Usually a wing was added later to the back of the house. See the photos of the Utter home. Family records say the younger children were born in Rocky Comfort area, and Cornelius and Louisa were buried in the Rocky Comfort Cemetery. His obituary says he belonged to the Christian Church in Rocky Comfort. The Christian Church also called Church of Christ in Rocky Comfort. A newspaper item regarding Rocky Comfort - Oct. 26, 1883, Pineville Herald - mentions the Cambellite or Christian minister.
NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: April 16, 1904 Cassville Democrat, Weekly Barry County Paper, Cassville, MO - Shady Grove News: D. A. Utter and family, O. R. Boyer and wife, Mrs. Judge Utter and Misses Zelma Carver and Gertie Twilligar attended the surprise dinner given C. J. Utter of near Sunrise. The dinner was in honor of his 60th birthday anniversary. He is a brother of the late Judge Utter. There was a large crowd present and all enjoyed themselves, fine eating and listening of the music furnished by friends. Note: Music was by the Utter Coronet Band.
CHRISTIAN CHURCH - Disciples of Christ, Christian Church, Church of Christ -- Found reference to Samuel Beaman that started several Disciples of Christ Churches in Barry, McDonald Counties and in NW Arkansas. Beaman was also from Indiana. The Clark County Indiana History (google books) mentions that there were several Christian Church congregations in early days of Clark County. Louisa's ancestors lived in Clark County. Cornelius' obituary says he joined Christian Church in 1879, same year he married Louisa.
