Biography

Joseph Winfred ("Fred" or "Dutch") Utterback was born 16 Dec 1894 in Nevada, Story Co., Iowa to Joseph Addison Utterback and Vinnie Lea Gaugh (aka Gough). [1] [2]

Note: For some reason the Iowa birth records show Joseph Winfred's name as "Hugh G." - perhaps they decided to change his name later. But the birth date is the same on his gravestone and family records and history have only listed 3 sons - William Ernest, Burton Ray, and Joseph Winfred.

When his mother died in 1902, he and his brother, Burt, were boarded out with a Holland Dutch family. Winfred grew up speaking Holland Dutch and, thus, earned the nickname "Dutch" which he went by the rest of his life. [3] His family moved to what is now Roswell, New Mexico in 1903, when he was nine - the youngest of 3 boys. They moved to Greenfield (near Dexter), New Mexico in 1910. [4]

From the writings of his brother, Ernest: [5] [4]

My father, J.A. Utterback, moved to Roswell from Hubbard, Iowa, in April of 1903. My mother had died in Iowa and Dad batched and raised us three boys. I was the oldest, fourteen at the time; Burt was twelve and Winfred nine. Dad rented a small twenty acre farm near the Country Club in Roswell.

As we grew up we began to scatter out. Winfred started in as a printers devil at the old Register Tribune, working under Bill Robertson. The Hall brothers worked there at about the same time. Winfred (Dutch) was a printer all of his life and finally owned a job printing shop in Oklahoma City. He was married twice but had no children. His widow still runs the Utterback Type Setting Co. on South Walker, Oklahoma City.

Fred married Rebecca (Reba) Lenora Hayden on 16 May 1925 in Canadian Co., Oklahoma. [6]
