Biography

Vincent Utterback was born 1 Mar 1820 in Orchard Knob, Hardin Co., Kentucky, USA ^[1] to Thompson Utterback and Elizabeth Vaughan. ^[2] His parents left Kentucky and settled near Elmdale, Montgomery Co., Indiana in 1828, where Vincent lived until his death. ^[1] He married Nancy Ann Cooley on 14 June 1842 in Montgomery Co., Indiana. ^{[3] [4] [5]}

Vincent and Nancy had the following children (with numbers from The Utterback Book): ^{[1] [6]}

1. (#645) John T. Utterback, b. 21 Apr 1844, d. 24 Mar 1913; m. 1) Huldah Quick, m. 2) Amelia Widener.
2. (#646) Martha Ann Utterback, b. 29 Jul 1846, d. 12 Oct 1860.
3. (#647) Mahala J. Utterback, b. 28 May 1849, d. 29 Aug 1862.
4. (#648) Philome Faradine Utterback, b. 29 Dec 1853, d. 25 May 1857.
5. (#649) Surilda Olive Utterback, b. 23 Nov 1856, d. 23 Mar 1862.
6. (#650) Mary Elizabeth Utterback, b. 19 Feb 1857, d. 21 May 1862.

Sadly, Mahala, Surilda, and Mary all died during an epidemic in 1862. ^[1] So, in a span of five years (1857-1862), they lost the youngest five of their six children!

Death Vincent Utterback

Vincent Utterback, aged about eighty-four years, died last Friday at his home near Elmdale. The funeral occurred Sunday morning at ten o'clock. Mr. Utterback was a pioneer resident of the county and leaves a wife and several grown children.
