Biography

Kate Utting was born in Hampshire, England.

Kate Utting was born in 1886 in Alverstoke, Hampshire, to James and Elizabeth Utting.^[1]

Her father worked as a sailmaker before he passed away when Kate was ten,^[2] and her mother found work as a beer retailer.^[3] Her siblings started working while still living with the family – James as a carpenter and Elizabeth, Rose and Jessie as seamstresses – and Kate moved on to live with James and Elizabeth^[4] until her marriage to Charles William Vernon in 1914.^[5]

The couple had one son, named Stanley^[6] before Charles was killed as one of the Nine Brave Men of the 82nd Field Company of the Royal Engineers during the Battle of the Somme.^[7]
