Biography

Young Uttley was born in 1860 to John and Sally Uttley.

In the 1870 census, Young Uttley’s profession is listed as a cotton spinner. He is 10 years old.

His siblings are Betsy, William, Richard, Mary, Grace, Sarah, Elizabeth,

In the 1880 census, Young is a farm servant to John Heap Whitaker who had 80 acres at Merril Head in Cliviger.

Young married Ruth Stansfield early in 1883.

In 1888, Young and Ruth have a son named Fred who dies at 8 months old.

In the 1891 census, Young is living with his wife Ruth in the Township of Cliviger in the civil parish of Whalley. He is working as an agricultural labourer.

In 1891 Young and Ruth Uttley have another son, Edward.

In 1901, the census lists Edward as living with Young and Ruth at 97 Clifton Terrace in the civil parish of Cliviger and the ecclesiastical parish of Holme in Cliviger. Young is a worker at a cattle farm.

In 1911, the census lists Edward living with parents Young (farmer) and Ruth, his 18 year old wife Ruth Annie and 4 month old daughter Norah on Sourhall Road at the postal address Clinton Farm, Todmorden. Young is a farmer.

At the age of 62, Young Uttley moved to Baldwinton Saksatchewan to homestead in 1922. His son went earlier to apply for Youngs properaty as well as his owna in Ballinora, Saskatcewan

In September 1922 Young Uttley, his wife Ruth, his daughter-in-law Ruth and grand-daughter Norah sailed over 3rd class on the Montcalm arriving in Quebec and taking the CPR to Saskatchewan.

From 1922 to 1928, Young Uttley improved the property. His Sworn Statement in 1928 lists the improvements of the property.

In 1928, Young Uttley applied for and received the Letters Patent on his property, having fulfilled the requirements of the Homestead grant. Young Uttley died in 1943.
