After August Wilder's death, Maria opened a grocery and dry goods store that she ran for several years.
She married for a second time on 15 December 1878 in the Lutheran Church in Ste. Genevieve to Henry Burgdorf, a widower from Randolph County, Illinois. He must have died before 1880 because she is listed as a widow in the Ste. Genevieve County 1880 Federal Census.
In her later years Maria lived with her son August until shortly after 1900. Then she moved to Harris County, Texas, to live with her daughter Wilhelmina.
She is buried in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery near Spring, Harris County, Texas.
