Hazel Valentine was born in 1900 in Haliburton, Ontario. She married Edward J. Ettinger when he returned from overseas after the First World War. He worked for Canadian National Railroad eventually becoming an engineer. Hazel did practical and private nursing. The Ettinger family lived in Fort William until 1942 then they moved to Biggar, Saskatchewan. They had one child, a daughter Muriel.
