Edward Valentine was christened on 14 May 1813 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of William and Sarah Valentine. His father's occupation was recorded as farmer, and the family's address as Eccleston.
Edward's father married Sarah Morris on 19 Feb 1821 at St Peter's Church in Liverpool, Lancashire. It's not clear whether Sarah Morris was Edward's mother or not - if she was, then he should rightly have been christened Edward Morris according to the customs of the times, but if she was not, then there should be an earlier marriage record for Edward's father, and none has yet been found.
By June 6th 1841, William and Sarah were living at Eccleston Hill, Eccleston with their children William, Edward, George, John and Ralph. John wasn't working yet, but all the other men were labourers except for Ralph, who was a watch tool maker. Sarah's son William Morris was listed as William Valentine for some reason. Two doors away lived the Houghton family.
Edward married Ellen Houghton on 4 Sep 1842 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Both were of full age (21 or more), and neither had been married before. Edward lived in Eccleston. Their fathers were named as William Valentine and Peter Houghton. The witnesses were Richard Houghton and Mary Valentine.
Edward's father died in 1843 in Prescot district, aged 67.
