Biography

Joseph Stephen "Joe" Valenzuela was born on 25 December 1896 in Los Angeles County, California, United States.[1] His parents were Marciano Valenzuela of Mexico and Aggrippina Ponce of California.[2] He had a brother named Phillip.

Military

Joe registered for the World War I draft.[3] He served in the United States military.[4] Joe registered for the "Old Man's Draft" for World War II in April 1942.[5]

Family

Joe married Concepcion Lopez Reyes on 15 September 1939 in Los Angeles, California.[6][2] They had a son, Richard Steven Valenzuela. He was a musician who went by the name of Ritchie Valens. He died in a plane crash in February 1959 at the age of 17.

In April 1940, Joe, his wife Concepcion, and her son Bob Morales were living in San Fernando, Los Angeles County, California. They were living in a rented house at 11636 Dronfield, which they rented for $8 per month. Joe had been living at this address since at least 1935 and this appeared to be the only Hispanic residence in the neighborhood. Joe was working as a watchman at the sewer pumping station. In 1939, he had worked 30 weeks and earned $385.[7]

In April 1942, Joe was living at 125 Riverside in Elsinore, Riverside, California. He was working for Dan Clark in Sedco, Riverside, California.[5]

At age 45, Joe was described as being 5 foot 7 inches tall, 180 pounds, with brown eyes, black hair, and a dark brown complexion.[5]

Death

Joe died at age 56 on 8 January 1952 in Los Angeles County, California.[8][1] Joe died at his residence at 13058 Filmore Street. It was recorded that at the time of his death, he and Concepcion were separated. He was buried on 12 January at Holy Cross Cemetery in Inglewood. Los Angeles County, California.[9][10]
