Biography

Gerret Jansen Van Couvenhoven possibly had two spouses, Aeltie Van Wyck is the wife named in his will. Other wife may have been Lysbet Andut

Gerret Janse (s. of Jan Gerretse) of Brn, m. 1st Lysbet ---; m. 2d Aeltie ---; d. about 1712; will dated Apl. 16, 1711, and probated Nov. 3, 1712. On assessment roll of Brooklyn of 1693 and census of 1698. Issue:

  1. Jackomyntie, bp. Jan. 15, 1699, in Brn, d. young; Church Record proves her mother as Lysbeth.
  2. Jacomyntie, bp. Mar. 2, 1701, in Brn, m. Sept. or Oct. 1720 Elbert Luyster;
  3. Aeltie, bp. Mar.2, 1701, in Brn, m. Jacob Cozine — all the above by 1st w Lysbeth;
  4. John of Buk, m. Maria or Mary Cozine, d. about 1761;
  5. William, supposed to have settled at Three Mile Run, N. J.
  6. Adriaentje. [1]

  1. Jackomyntie bp 15 Jan 1699. Brooklyn. of Gerrit and Lysbeth. Wits. Jan Gerritse Couwenhoven and Gerardina his wife. [2]
  2. Jacomyntie bp. 2 March 1701 Brooklyn, of Gerritt Van-C and Lysbeth.
  3. Aaltje bp. 2 March 1701 Brooklyn, of Gerrit and Lysbeth, witnesses for the two girls were Steven Richard and Maria his wife, Abram Jorisse and Aeltje his wife.[3]

Will

Gerret's New York will dated Apr 16, 1711, probated Nov 3, 1712. In the will he calls himself "Gerret, son of Jan Gerretse Van Couvenhoven" His wife Aeltje was named and "my son Jan". He named his wife and his brother Nicesemus Cowenhoven and Theodorus Van Wyck as exe. Wits. Aris Johnson, Jacobus Simonsen, Harry Filkin. By the date of probate in November 1712 Aeltie was re-married to Jacobus Cozine. [4]
