Biography

Margaret Van Nest, born September 30, 1717, and was baptized October 14, 1719, the daughter of Peter Van Nest Jr., and Tryntje Janes. Peter was the son of Pieter Pieterson Van Nest of NES in Holland, and Judith Rapalie, born July 5, 1635 the daughter of Joris Jansen Rapalie and Catalyntje Trico Valencinnes, France, who arrived in New Amsterdam in 1620.

Marigritie was born prior to 14 October 1719 when she was baptized at the First Reformed Church, Raritan (Somerville), Somerset, New Jersey. She is the granddaughter of Pieter Pieterszen van Neste and Tryntje Jans, but mistaken as their daughter. [1]

Joris Jansen born circa 1600, died circa 1663; was a descendant of a noble family of Brittany; he was a Huguenot, and fled from France to Holland, thence in the “Unity” to New Amsterdam in 1623; at Albany, N.Y. (1623—37); resident at Wallabout; magistrate; was one of the “Twelve Men” of Brooklyn; he married Catalynite (1605-89) ; the daughter of Joris Trico of Paris, France.

The Rapalie farm extended along the shore line on Long Island between the Brooklyn Bridge, under the Manhattan Bridge to near the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

(2) - David Cassatt, b. 4-11-1743 d. 12-29-l823 (tombstone)
(3) - Peter Cassatt (killed by Indians)

(6) - Elizabeth Cassatt.”

(Reference: Justice Collection in possession of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, 1300 Locust Street, Philadelphia, Pa. Copied by the Compiler August 1934).

The following was written by the late Oliver L. Cozad of Marion, Ohio:

“Francis Cosart (103), son of David (8) baptised at New York City,. July 21, l7l7. It will be seen that he became of age in 1738 and evidently married about this time as his eldest child Madalena we find was baptised at the Raritan Dutch Church October 17, 1740. His wife Margaret Van Nest was baptised at this same church October 14, 1719, she being a daughter of Peter Van Nest and his wife (second) Catherine Jane.

David (8) father of Francis had now been dead less than a year when Madalena was born. About a month later we find Francis and Margaret sold the following described tract of land in Middlesex County. “Francis Cosart and wife Margaret of Piscataway Township, Middlesex County, Yeoman. To Johnathan Dunn of Elizabethtown, Essex County - Plantation of 162 acres which Cosart bought of Peter Williamson and Williamson bought of Even Drummond and James Alexander Esqrs., May 17, 1736 it being in Piscataway Township. See volume E2, page 479, New Jersey Deeds, Trenton, N.J.

Francis Cosart and wife Margaret Van Nest are buried in the church yard of the Conewago Dutch Church in Straban Township, near Hunterstown, Pennsylvania, some six miles east of Gettysburg.

After their death their descendants adopted more different forms of spelling the family name than did the descendants of any other couple in America. Those remaining about York and Adams county, Penna. settlement took the name of CASSATT, while those who went down into Virginia took the name of COZAD, those going to Kentucky took the name of COZATT, COSATT, COZART, COSSAIRT, CASSATT, COSAT, COZAT and etc., yet as will later be seen they all belong to the family of Francis Cosart and wife Margaret Van Nest.

Van Neste is the surname recorded for Marigritie's father at her baptism. Capitalization of the preposition "van" is incorrect and has been corrected per project naming conventions. Quackenbush-118 01:36, 22 May 2017 (EDT)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM "FIND A GRAVE" WEBSITE

Birth: Oct. 14, 1719
Raritan, Somerset County, New Jersey, USA
Death: 1790
York County, Pennsylvania, USA

According to the book, THE FAMILY COSSART, page 10, Margarette was the daughter of Peter Van Nest III and Magdalena DuBois, and a descendant of Charlemagne. The date of birth above is actually her baptism in the Raritan Church. page 12 states she is buried with her husband Francis who died in 1795, but does not give her date of death. The date of death 1790 is from the Conewago Deacons Records, published in New Netherland Connections. She married Francis Cossart in 1739.

Francis and Margarette Cossart, along with many other Dutch families moved in 1764 from Somerset County NJ to this Conewago Valley settlement, which was then in York County, now in Adams county. Their home "Cossart's Dream" built about 1785 is still standing, and still occupied. Descendants of this couple took on many variations of the surname. Their sons, David and Jacob, both started spelling their surname Cassat.

Their children, all baptized in the Raritan Dutch Reform church of Somerset County NJ, were:
Madeline Cossart, born 10/17/1740 in New Jersey
David Cossart born NJ 11 Apr 1743
Peter Cossart born NJ 30 Aug 1746 (later killed by Indians in KY)
Jacob Cossart born NJ 21 Apr 1751
Christina Cossart born NJ 21 Aug 1755, married Cornelius Clopper
Elizabeth Cossart, born NJ 29 Aug 1758.

Van Nest-283 and Van Neste-12 appear to represent the same person because: same son

I merged and kept the younger set of parents. The father was not the same man. they were father and grandfather, both named Pieter.

The Pieter born 1653 married Tryntje Jans, but she seems to not be the mother of the first two children, including the younger Pieter. The younger Pieter's mother is named in the bio, but does not seem to have a profile yet.

The information that the younger Pieter married Tryntie Jans instead seems improbable, despite what some sources infer. Tryntje is almost 20 years older than the younger Pieter.

So there is a bit more sorting and correcting to do.

Van Neste-13 and Van Neste-12 appear to represent the same person because: Exact same father and baptism date. Only difference is mother which appears to be an error. The error should be addressed once merged.

I believe in looking this over that they are the same and the she is the daughter of Peter Van Neste and Magdalena DuBois. Does anyone have a source for the 1717 birth?

It is interesting that Peter Brokow is the witness for her birth. He is the son-in-law of Peter born 1653 as stated in his will. Does anyone know which daughter was his wife?

It is likely they are the same. This Pieter van Nest and Tryntje Jans weren't known to have had a daughter named Margriete and baptized their last child in 1708 when Pieter was 55.

The father of Margaret van Nest (Cossaart) names his wife as Mardeleantie in his 1753 will, which is believed to be Magdalena du Bois. https://archive.org/stream/documentsrelatin33newj#page/452/mode/2up

I am trying to compare Van_Neste-13 with Van_Neste-12.

Van_Neste-13 was the daughter of Van-Nest-11 who was the paternal grandfather of Van-Nest-12...

But, I am thinking they are the same person based on birthdates. Also, Van_Neste-12 has no siblings (odd), but is the mother of Francis Cossart's descendants.

Also, my reference (Cossart Family History, 1939) shows Marigritie (Margaret) as the daughter of mother Trijntje (not mother DuBois):

Francis Cossart married Margaret Van Nest, born September 30, 1717, and was baptized October 14, 1719, the daughter of Peter Van Nest Jr., and Tryntje Janes. Peter was the son of Pieter Pieterson Van Nest of NES in Holland, and Judith Rapalie, born July 5, 1635 the daughter of Joris Jansen Rapalie and Catalyntje Trico Valencinnes, France
