From the Michigan Legislative Biography. [1] Vital Records Information: Birth: 11/22/1814 in Kent, NY. Death: 10/14/1890. He married Ruth Bissell on 9/19/1839 (she died 2/9/1852); they had two children: Rachel (McPherson) and Caroline (Heek or Heck; see last sentence); he married Angeline Bissell on 5/6/1852. Of Dutch descent. Son of Rowland and Rachel (Drew) VanScoy. He was born 3 months after his father's death from fever following the War of 1812. At 13 he was hired out for 9 months to work on a farm. He taught school for 6 terms. He came to Michigan in 1839 and purchased a farm in DeWitt, Clinton Co. He sold this farm in 1854 and moved to Essex, MI; he owned other properties, including several lots in Maple Rapids. He was active in banking. He served as supervisor [of Essex and DeWitt twps], treasurer and justice of the peace and was the village president of Maple Rapids. He was a recruiter during the Civil War. member of the Masons and the Grange. One of the first settlers in DeWitt Township. Father in law of Rep. George R. Heck.

Was born in Kent, N.Y., November 22, 1814, He received a common school education, and was a teacher several winters. In 1839 he came to Michigan and bought a farm in De Witt, Clinton County. In 1854 he sold his farm and removed to Essex, Clinton County, where he now resides on a farm of 1,200 acres. He owns several other farms, in all about 2,000 acres, a large number of village lots in Maple Rapids, and a large brick block, and carries on a banking business. He has held many town offices, including supervisor, treasurer and justice; has been president of the village of Maple Rapids, recruiting officer during the rebellion and was a Representative from 1871 to 1875.
