Biography

Peter was born in 1695. He passed away after 1769. [1]

Peter, son of Isaac Jacob and Fronica was born May 25, 1695 and the record is given, St. Stephens Parish, Cecil Co., and also D.A.R. Library, Washington D.C. He was born in Pennsylvania. His father did not live in Maryland until later. The earliest record of Peter in Virginia is in Lunenburg Co. where he and his son Isaac are given Titheables in 1748. Even though reference is given to them later in Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties, they were probably in the same location from 1748 to about 1769 when his sons Peter, Jr. and John moved to Botetourt County. Halifax County taken from Luenburg Co. 1752. Pittsylvania County formed from Halifax 1767. Note also that Greenbrier County was formed from Botetourt in 1777 and that Kanawha County, West Virginia was formed from Greenbrier in 1789.

The last reference to Peter, Sr., born in 1695 is in a deed made April 6, 1769 in Pittsylvania county. He is not given in any of the records of Botetourt County and he probably died soon after 1769. Peter had three sons, Isaac, Peter Jr., and John. His only daughter was Brigetta who married Isaac Robinson. His eldest son was Isaac, the second Peter, and the youngest, John. The best account of the Van Bibber family in Virginia was written by Mrs. M.W. Donally (a descendant of John) and is given in West Viginia Historical Magazine, No. 3-1903, Page 213.

The Battle of Point Pleasant took place in what is now Mason County West Virginia on 10 October 1774. The battle site overlooks the Ohio River. The battle was between the English colonists and the Indians and was part of what is known as Dunmore's War. The main cause of Dunmore's War was the incursion of the white man into Indian lands, especially the Ohio Valley.

The Van Bibber family were early settlers in the Greenbrier and were, like most settlers on the frontier, seeking new and better land. Also, like most pioneers, the Van Bibbers were members of the militia and were willing to fight for possession of this new land.

The battle was a temporary defeat for the white settlers but a great loss for the Van Bibber family who settled on the this primitive frontier.

Isaac Van Bibber (sometimes known as Michael) was one of the victims. There were one-hundred and forty whites killed including the commanding officer, Colonel Charles Lewis, but to the family of Isaac Van Bibber it was a loss that would change their entire world.

Isaac had several young children and his loss would cause the breakup of the family. Isaac's wife remarried and his son Isaac Jr. would live with the famous Daniel Boone. Kanawha Co., Virginia records indicated that another son, Matthias, was raised by Isaac's brother Peter Van Bibber. Isaac was not the only Van Bibber family member at the Battle of Point Pleasant. Various lists also include Captain John, Peter, and John Jesse Van Bibber as participants in the battle.
