Biography

There is a lot of uncertainty and many opinions as to where his father Matthys originally came from. [1] Upon his immigration to North America Matthys Cornelisen had to choose a surname & went with Van Hoorn ... the word "van" meaning "from" and "Hoorn" was his native city. [2]

Cornelis Mathysz VanHorne (son of Mathijs Cornelissen & Fijtje Brouwer) was baptized on 04 May 1695 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York with witnesses Thomas Lammerse & Elizabeth Thomas. [3]

In 1716 he lived in the former home of John Bowne. [4]

Cornelius Van Horne held the Commission of Captain from King George II of England, an honor of which was extremely proud and he was always known as "Captain Cornelius" ... it was even inscribed on his gravestone.

He had 10 children by 3 wives ...

  1. m=c1721 Catharine Cox b=20 Sep 1695
  2. m=c1724 Elizabeth Lawrence b=23 Feb 1699
  3. m=15 Mar 1732 Hannah Seabrook [5] b=15 Nov 1706.

He first married about 1721 to Catharine COX who was the daughter of Thomas COX, one of the patentees of the Monmouth Treaty who lived in Middleton, New Jersey where he was a very influential citizen. Thomas COX left a Last Will dated Feb 16, 1723 in which he mentions "my daughter Catharine and her infant son Thomas", so evidentially the child was named for him.

Before 1729 Captain Cornelius purchased a large tract of land in Hunterdon County, near the confluence of the northern and southern branches of Rockaway Creek. It was near land owned by his brother Abraham VanHorne who had recently founded Whitehouse, New Jersey.

On Nov 6, 1728 he and his brother Abraham were appointed on a Commission to try pirates.

His second wife, Elizabeth Lawrence was the daughter of James Lawrence (1660-1730) and Mehetable Alburtis (the Captain's step-sister). James Lawrence left a Last Will proven in 1730 [6] in which he mentions his wife "Mehitable and his children Jacob, John, James, Hannah, Mary Rebecca, Debra; and the three children of his daughter Elizabeth, deceased, namely Mathias, Catharine and Elizabeth VanHorne".

His third wife, Hannah Seabrook, was the daughter of James Seabrook and Hannah Grover. She was a second cousin of Elizabeth Lawrence (the Captain's second wife). She was a direct descendant of Thomas Seabrook, the progenitor of the New Jersey Family of Seabrooks who had settled at Minneford Island in 1664, and later lived at Hempstead, Long Island, New York. The children were reportedly in a family bible passed down from Hannah:[7][8]

  • Mary b. 12 April 1733
  • Cornelius b. 4 May 1737
  • Abram b. 28 August 1738
  • James b. 23 April 1740
  • John b. 3 May 1742
  • Daniel b. 2 May 1743

On 24 Dec 1743 he made his Last Will.

On 03 Feb 1744 he added a Codicil to his Last Will.

Cornelis Mathysz VanHorne died on 12 Feb 1744 in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey [9] & was buried in the old cemetery near the Railroad Station in Whitehouse with the gravestone inscription ...

In memory of

Died February 12, 1744
in ye 49th year of his age [10]

On 16 March 1744 his Last Will & Codicil were admitted to probate [11][12] & mentioned ...

Research Notes

LNAB

There do not appear to be any church records involving Cornelis aside from his baptism. He appears in other types of records with van Horn, van Hoorn and van Horne, so the most common spelling version of "van Horn" has been made his last name at birth. Quackenbush-118 14 April 2017.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Cornelis Mathysz by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Cornelis Mathysz:

The information above about the yDNA of Mathys Cornelissen descendants is unfortunately incorrect. The Van Horne Surname yDNA project was established in 2005. As of today, 24 descendants or cousins have tested, the terminal SNP / haplogroup has been identified. It has also been proven with conventional research and DNA evidence that Mathys Cornelissen was DANISH, not Dutch, and that he was born in the vicinity of Horne, Hjorring, Jutland, DENMARK. This URL takes you to the project's yDNA test results

https://www.familytreedna.com/public/VanHorne?iframe=ycolorized. This chart also includes yDNA test results for the descndants of Jan Cornelisen and Christian Barentsen. The project has conclusively proven these three men were not related and came from different places: Jan from Hoorn, North Holland; Christian from Lower Saxony and Mathys from Horne, Hjorring, Denmark. Mathys NEVER used the Van Horne surname. The surname used by the oldest son, Cornelius, after 1730 was Van HOREN, His descendants most often used Van Horne. The younger son, Abraham, used Vanhorn but his descendants used Vanhorn, Van Horn and Van Horne. Please be warned that ALL published VAN HORNE genealogies are incorrect in one way or another. I have original source documentation that conclusively proves the above statements. If you have questions, please write me at [email address removed]--Google me you will find my address, and it is on the project public pages.

Also, it looks liked James Van Horne is the son James, although the birthdate on his profile differs from that in the bible by a few weeks. This is reportedly the first step in the line down to the Hon. Burt Van Horn who had possession of Hannah's bible.

I descend from Mary wife of Benjamin Burroughs. Several pieces of circumstantial evidence point to her being a Van Horn, and a family bible record abstracted in M. A. De L. Van Horne's book p.3 indicates his third daughter, mentioned but unnamed in his will, was Mary b. 1733. This fits very will with a marriage to Benjamin Burroughs b. ca. 1727, with first child born ca. 1753.

I would like to attach Mary as daughter of Cornellis and Hannah with uncertain flags and explanation in the bio. Partly, this is because Mary is in my direct maternal line and so this would propagate my mother's mtDNA test up through Hannah and further around the big tree. If this could someday confirm the kinship between Hannah Seabrook and Mary, it would make it pretty clear that this placement is correct. Alternatively, it could someday lead to a disproof of the relationship.

can I add a transcription of Cornelis Last Will to this profile ?

I don't know if it is because he married 3 English ladies but it would seem that there are no church records for him except for the 1732 marriage and I've not figured out how to access the Hopewell DRC records. Therefore we'll stick with "van Horn" for his LNAB but with corrected capitalization.

Van Horn-127 and Van Horne-137 appear to represent the same person because: This excess profile that I disambiguated can now be merged into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks!

I disambiguated Sarah and Cornelius. Her correct name is Sarah Hendrickszen.

They are not father and daughter, but rather half-siblings, children of Fytje Adams Brouwer. So I adjusted the relationships, and attached the common mother, in preparation for merge into the correct sibling match.

The explanation of the family relationships and the source is in the bio.

We have a bit of a problem on the lineage here. My notes say that Cornelius was instead the son of Matthys Cornelisen Van Horne, b. 1651 in Jutland, Denmark, and Fytie Adamse Brouwer.

My main source on this was Marleen Sue Van Horne, way back in 2000, She had the family at Van Horne family

Marleen is that couple's sixth great-granddaughter.

She reports that "Unfortunately, there is a great deal of fictional genealogy relating to this couple and their two sons. Some of this creative genealogy is the result of doing the best that could be done with limited resources and some of it is just plain fraudulent."

Their other son, besides Cornelius, was Abraham Van Horne b. January 15, 1698/99.

So we will need to assess this later.

Edit July 19, 2015:

The WRONG parents currently attached are Son of Abraham VanHorne and Marie Provoost. Those will need to be removed, before merge.

Those parents were married in 1700, and so this Cornelius born 1695 does not fit those parents. Also, those parents do have a profile of a correct son Cornelisus, born 1706, which is clearly correct. So I am going to go ahead and disconnect these wrong parents.
